hihi! This is my first post here, nice to meet you all.

I have been wanting to get into CRT monitors for a while now and recently came across a local listing of this Samtron monitor at an electronics recycling place which seemed to be in otherwise fine condition apart from an issue while it is displaying color. I find this monitor to be really attractive and it is one of the better priced CRTs I have seen yet in my local area, so I am considering picking it up despite this issue.

The listing describes the issue as "Works fine with just monochrome / text, however on color output it seem to have some issue, see picture." I will attach the relevant images. The model is SC-441V but the FCC is CSYSC-431VA, so im assuming the 441 is closely related to the 431.

I dont have experience with CRT repair but I do tinker with lots of other electronic stuff from time to time, so I was hoping that if someone who knew a little bit about common issues was able to point me in a direction, I could read up on the relevant info and decide if it would be something I could attempt to repair myself, or if I should just skip out on it. This would help inform my purchase decision. Maybe if someone could let me know if it looks like something simple like a capacitor, or if it is indicative of a tube issue or flyback or whatever--note that I dont actually know what some of these issues might entail, but it would still be useful for me to have an idea of where to start my reading.

Of course, if the problem looks too general to identify potential culprits, thats alright! I'm not expecting a magic solution or anything 😀

Thanks!

This looks like a case of something magnetic having been placed too close to the monitor for a long period of time. I think it might be possible to correct the issue with a "degaussing coil" or something similar? Maybe someone more knowledgeable than me will now chime in 😆

oops, I think the pictures I attached went down. I'll upload new ones here.

Thanks! This would make sense.

I have come to realize that the seller may have misidentified the issue as only occurring with color output. I think maybe the terminal text used to test the mono mode simply may not have reached the bad zone of the screen. You can see a little bit of the text in the last line of the mono image seems to show similar symptoms as the color image, and in a similar spot too. For now im going to assume that it needs degaussing or maybe the degaussing strip (not sure if this is what its called, but ive heard that monitors usually have a degausser built in along the edges of the screen or something like that) may have gone bad.
