In Aquamark3 the larger cache of the T-bred makes itself felt: at default settings Athlon XP is 15% faster than Duron and even at the heaviest settings it is still 10% faster!
Still not a crushing advantage!

15. We go back in time to 3dmark 2000, a simple DirectX 7 test
1024*768 default settings
16. 1280*1024
T-bred first
Duron second
17. 1600*1200
Finally Athlon XP destroys its little cousin: 24% better than Duron across all resolutions! For a processor that was launched at 240 USD it is for the first time that it manages to obliterate a processor launched at a third of that sum!
18. 3dmark 2001 is "the benchmark"; most people looking to build a socket 462 system will look for the scores in this particular test! You need a balanced system to get a good score, something that obviously we do not have here as both processors are far too weak to the geforce 7800gs - this is a good thing as we are testing the CPU's!
1024*768 default settings
T-bred first
Duron second
19. We increase the resolution and settings to 1280*1024 max
20. And one more time we go up to 1600*1200
In 3dmark 2001 Athlon XP wins again by 10-15% depending on the resolution. This will surely be felt in any DirectX 8 game! So the larger cache has a very high influence on performance!
21. We reached 3mark 2003, a DirectX 9 test - actually only the nature test is DirectX 9, the rest are DirectX 8!
1024*768 default settings:
Athlon XP 2200 first
Duron 1800 second
22. We go up to 1280*1024 max settings:
23. And finally 1600*1200:
In 3dmark 2003 Athlon XP still maintains a lead over the Duron, albeit a very small one: 1-5% depending on the resolution.
24 & 25 & 26. In the sound tests, for which we have results for all 3 options: NO sound, 24 sounds and 60 sounds, XP has a more significant lead: 6% across all resolutions. So, even with a very good integrated sound card such as sound storm, you still need a good CPU to get the most out of it.
27. The final 3dmark is the 2005 version. Released in 2004 it is very tough on the video card, so even with such weak processors the bottleneck is actually on the 7800gs on anything but the lowest settings!
1024*768 default settings:
T-bred first
Applebred second
28. At 1280*1024 the results are so close that they are practically indistinguishable:
29. 1600*1200: Nothing to see here, move along ...
Unfortunately in 3dmark 2005 you really need a far more powerful video card to get past the GPU bottleneck as the scores are incredible close.
Only at 1024*768 Athlon XP manages to beat the Duron by 7%.
30. The one and only GUI test is Tom 2d and here XP manages to win by a a huge 17%!
Athlon
Duron
31 & 32 & 33. Synthetic 3d tests are over, it is time to check general system performance with PC MARK and 2002 is the first version released:
Athlon XP 2200
Duron 1800
Well, the difference is not at all that great! Only the CPU score of the Athlon XP is 5% better, the memory score are practically identical! The extra cache provides only a small performance boost in PC mark 2002!
