Edit is a new command-line text editor in Windows. Edit is open source, so you can build the code or install the latest version from GitHub!

This CLI text editor will be available to preview in the Windows Insider Program in the coming months. After that, it will ship as part of Windows 11!

Mabye they'll bring back a basic notepad next.

maybe someone should port it to linux just to fuck with the vim/emacs heads by having something designed to be usable!!

They did that already. See: https://github.com/microsoft/edit/releases.

EDIT: Tested it on Debian Linux and it works. But the Linux and Windows versions both have the same bug that the tab or arrow keys don't work in the save popup. You can use the mouse though to select the desired option.
