USB to TTL adaptor
I purchased the following USB to TTL adaptor from Amazon but I think most 2303 versions should work.
The pin out is:
Red - VCC 5V
Black - GND ground
White - RXD
Green - TXD
NB - these things are delicate and cheap, be gentle generally and more so pulling the pins off the monitor connection
Windows OS
If you want to install on Windows XP you will need to install this driver
I installed Windows 10 64bit Pro and the driver was automatically installed. I have read some reports that some USB to TTL have a clone Prolific chip inside that when detected with the Prolific more recent driver and prevent it from working and this is highlighted in device manager with working to the device name to the effect of ‘blocked’.
Opening up the Sony Monitor (GDM-F500R) and connecting the USB to TTL Pins
There were only 4 screws in each corner then it just slid back and off. There is a lot of metal shielding that does not need to be removed. Do not go touching the area on top with the thick cable and rubber grommet - very dangerous voltage, in fact there is not need to go touching anything under the shields.
You are looking for a small set of 4 pins on the main PCB that is likey to be near the edge. Might was upright and hard to see. I was just about able to read the PCB through the small holes of the shield (rather that remove) to identify what the pins were, on my model it was:
1st pin (top) = gnd
2nd pin = +5v
3rd pin = rxd
4th pin (bottom) = txd
I connected the pins from the USB to TTL as follows (NB you need to connect RXD <> TXD & TXD <> RXD (so that is Read to Transmit, NOT read to read & transmit to transmit)):
1st pin (top) gnd <> Black
2nd pin +5v no need to connect red as powered provide from PC and monitor
3rd pin rxd <> Green
4th pin (bottom) txd <> White
Installing and setting up WinDAS
Download from https://archive.org/download/sony-das-original/DASX.zip
You only need the Windows version so just extracted WinDAS to c:\windas
For Windows XP run c:\windas\active\activex.bat
For Windows 10 I copied msflxgrd.ocx to c:\windows\system & c:\windows\system32
For each area: c:\windows\system, c:\windows\system32 and c:\windas\active I ran as admin ‘regsvr32 .\msflxgrd.ocx’. (I was getting various errors so I just covered all bases and it worked, so not sure which was path correct)
Open Windows Device manager and find the USB to TTL adaptor and at the end in () it will tell what com port it is on, mine was com4
Open c:\Windas\windas.exe you are likely to get around 3 error messages but these relate to not having a colour calibration tool connected not the connection to the monitor so they can be ignored
From within WinDAS from the ‘Set up’ dropdown menu select ‘configuration’ and in the first box select the com port that your USB to TTL was listed in Device Manager, mine was Com4 and in the 2nd box scroll all the way down to manual and click OK.
Power on your monitor and provide it with a continual video signal to prevent iit from going into sleep mode else the connection will drop
From within WinDAS from the ‘Set up’ dropdown menu select ‘Model Sel’ scroll through and select your monitor, if the below model list pop up does not appear this is because you have not registered the msflxgrd.ocx correctly.
Then click ok and it will be listed
Now you want to backup the current configuration by selecting from the File drop down ‘Save data to file’ select a location and filename and click Go there is a slow progress bar and the monitor will turn on and off once or twice. I also suggest making a copy of this file so you have a backup of the backup just in case, also check the file size is more than 0mb.
If you get no errors everything is connected and working ready to use WinDAS as you want.
