I have an old chaintech ct-6bda Intel 440bx
https://theretroweb.com/motherboards/s/chaintech-ct-6bda

With a pentium 3 slot 1 800mhz /100mhz is it worth to upgrade to one of those adapters for socket 370 and use a Celeron 1.1ghz 100mhz fsb?

Thank you!

What kind of worth are you looking to get from the upgrade?

Definitely buy a coppermine capable slotket but use PIII 1Ghz or 900Mhz instead of Celeron. Celerons consume too much power for the performance they give you.

I thought about buying a 1100Mhz PIII (not celeron) but I don't really need that performance.

If slotket prices are as high as they were last time I checked, it would be cheaper to buy parts for an AthlonXP setup if you're after performance.

Personally I find 600Mhz is fine for Win9x games, anything faster just means slightly quicker load times.
Anything that struggles on a P3 600 is crossing over into P4 territory.

I've upgraded just to cross the 1Ghz mark though, so if that's the goal then it's still a valid upgrade IMHO.

this!
you can get a whole athlon xp bundle (mobo + ram + cpu + gpu) for the price of just the slotket adapter...

But you do not get ISA with Athlon XP. If you want a high clocked PIII, you need to buy a slotket.

An alternative is Duron/Athlon on KT133.

I had a similar dilemma recently. First upgrade to 1Ghz Coppermine and that was great. But got the itch and eventually bought a cheap slocket and a modded Tualatin off ebay.
Was it worth it? Probably not but I scratched the itch.

But you do not get ISA with Athlon XP.

You do with a motherboard using the KT133A chipset.

KT133A builds can be a lot more "exciting" than a 440BX.

  • The VIA 4-1 driver experience isn't universally enjoyed
  • Balancing a heatsink on top of the Athlon XP requires more caution and dexterity compared to Slot1 or S370 Tualatin
  • KT133A boards often come from the middle of the capacitor plague, while 440BX boards frequently predate the age of the bad caps.
  • "Edge case" compatibility issues with some AGP & PCI cards
  • 686B southbridge bug that can corrupt files when doing large UDMA100 transfers w/ Creative SB Live! if not mitigated

But like all retro computing, it's not always performance or ease of use. It's about making the system that you loved, or making the system that you always wanted to love.

Many people have fond memories of the KT133A chipset and the systems can work well, even if they take a little more planning.

So to the OP, if a 1.1ghz slot1 mobo is what you always wanted, go for it. But a PIII 800 is going to give you ~85% of the performance with fewer headaches.

In my experience, the 100Mhz FSB variant of the P3-800 and the Coppermine Celeron 1100 provide almost identical performance. The extra 300MHz clock speed is offset by only having half as much cache as the P3. A Tualatin Celeron (with a compatible board or adapter) is faster as it retains the same 256kb cache size as the Coppermine P3.

It would make more sense to buy the super rare Coppermine PIII 1100 (100Mhz FSB) than a Celeron. Hardly anyone has that.

Pitty that KT133 doesn't support Athlon XP. I have 4 KT133 boards, I was not lucky to buy a KT133A one. 1.2Ghz Athlons are not that common, I managed to get 3 of them while they were cheap.

Soltek SL-75KAV is one of the boards that's got both KT133A and ISA. If anyone is looking for one, I highly recommend it. Latest BIOS is said to support mobile Bartons even.
