Dosbox 0.72 (latest)

Okay, so I mount the directory, mount the CD rom and try to play the game. I get the following error:

Mel Fatal Error #: 26 Trap #: 15
Mel Protected Mode Version 2.2.7 10/14/94

And then the other DOSBOX window says:

SHELL: Redirect output to out

I dunno what the problem is. There was another guy on a different forum who had a similar problem but his says Fatal Error #29, and he was told to mount the CD rom. I dunno if Fatal Error 26 is something related or not.

I've used DOG Frontend to try to play, I've used plain DOSBox. I mounted the CD/DVD ROM drive. I copied the CD to HD and mounted the directory. And yes, I ran set up/config for Jacob's star beforehand, etcetera.

I just don't get it. It's driving me nuts. Any help? Need more information?
I'm running Windows XP if that matters, on a newer Del computer which should be able to handle the game with ease.

Thanks in advance.

Please post exactly how you mounted the drives, and how you installed the game.

From DOG:

mount a "d:\" -t cdrom
mount g "c:\games\renegade_cd" -ioctl -t cdrom
mount y "c:\games\"
Y:
cd/
cd renegade
call RENEGADE.BAT

I've also used it without the G mounting. Basically I tried to mount the CD Rom, and I also tried to copy the CD contents to the hard drive and mount that instead. Note that regarding the above code, the game itself is located in: C:\Games\Renegade while the Cd's contents (required) is located at C:\games\renegade_cd

I also tried like (without the " " that DOG has)

mount a d:\ -t cdrom
or
mount a d:\ -t cdrom -iotcl

or used the -label with DOG, or the -cdrom 0 or whatever where you assign a number right? Then another guy said, I think the game doesn't like EMS memory so I turned that off. Got a different error but an error none the less, then turned off XMS and the game didn't run so it needs XMS. But the readme.txt tells me that anyway.

Note I tried both DOG, and also using just the DOSbox.

As for game installation itself. I have the original game CD, which I bought off ebay for a few bucks. So I threw the CD in my DVD/CD rom drive and loaded up the command prompt on Windows XP and went to the drive and hit "INSTALL" and then proceeded through teh various steps. I configured sound (which became Gravis Ultrasound) and a joystick for the game as well (regular, as opposed to Thrustmaster. Since I don't think my Wingman qualifies as Thrustmaster).

The game is available via home of the underdogs if anyone would like to test it themselves. I know of at least one or two guys who got it running with DosBox and one or two more who didn't.

Didn't test that game, but you should stick to "standard" mounting. It's not possible to run a "real" DOS system without a C:\-drive.

C:\ = first hard disk, install the game here (you should re-install the game)
D:\ = CD-ROM

PS: anything related to "Abandonware" is not welcome on VOGONS.

D + C only? Okay I'll try that out.
Sorry, wasn't trying to promote abandonware, as the game I have is in fact one of the original CDs. I'm too materialistic to pirate games for the most part, I need to own the pretty box 😜

Still doesn't work.
Did:

mount c c:\games\renegade
mount d d:\ -t cdrom -iotcl

and

mount c c:\games\
mount d d:\ -t cdrom -usecd 0

then went to the directory, and ran it.

Got the same error.
I dunno.

Next thing to try would be to create an image of the CD, and install from there. For testing, you should always re-install into a empty directory, btw. .

Hey everyone,

I had this error as well. However, after having changed my sound card to be detected as a Sound Blaster Pro I, I noticed a brief 'pop' from the speakers every time the game was attempting to load.

Running on the suspicion that the crash was sound related, I went into config.exe and disabled the sound drivers completely. After doing so, the game ran successfully, just with no sound =)

I'm still working on getting the sound working, and will give an update when I do. I just figured that anyone who just wants to play the game, sound or not, can do so through the aforementioned method.

UPDATE: After a ton of trial and error, I've found that Digital sound will function if you select 'Orchid Soundwave32' as your sound card in sound.exe.

I'm still working on getting sound from the cd functioning, but it certainly is satisfying to hear the lasers fire again after all these years 😀

Counter to Renegades suggestion above I see the same "Mel Fatal Error" as when using SB or GUS sound when using the "Orchid Soundwave32" option (/w DB .74).
