I have a CMI8738 LX 0234 built into my i815e motherboard. I installed version 2.37 of the drivers on Windows 98se, and if I select Soundblaster in the game settings, I can hear sound and FM music in DOS games, but the music is very quiet, much quieter than the sound effects. Increasing the music volume in the settings doesn't help much. I installed the drivers for DOS and tried to boot into it, but the situation remained the same. I tested it in Doom1 and Duke Nukem 3D

I tried about 7 different drivers for the 8738 for DOS - half of them said they couldn't find the PCI card. A few worked, but the volume couldn't be adjusted through the C3DMIX utility, and I would rate the volume at 3 out of 10. And only the most recent driver https://theretroweb.com/uploads/drivers/dos-1 … 20606534825.exe allowed me to adjust the volume of the music, but even at the maximum volume, I would rate the actual volume at 6 out of 10. The sound can only be initialized properly using this patched utility: C-Media 8738 dos initialize tool "PATCHED"
