i'm stuck. presumably this adapter is a drop in replacement for a laptop hdd. my laptop uses a slide-in caddy with a small adapter board to convert the 44 pins to an edge type connector. pin 1 is marked on the caddy adapter board and there is no filled-in pin keying (hdd can be plugged in upside down). the 2.5 ide to cf adapter has no pin markings and is missing 1 pin for keying.
the problem is that the cf adapter only fits in the caddy with the cf card face up. plugging it in the other way pushes the adapter board slightly out of alignment and is a no-go. if this cf adapter was designed as a drop in hdd replacement you'd think it would be designed to fit within the original 2.5 hdd form factor.
when i power on the laptop with the cf adapter inserted i get a buzzing sound with the hdd indicator lit--no post. i'm also using a sd to cf card adapter if that matters. nothing appears to have been fried. laptop, cf adapter, sd card all continue to function when used separately. (i have no way to independently test the 2.5 ide to cf adapter).
did i have this thing plugged in upside down? which side is pin 1 on as viewed in the supplied image? left or right?
