not have any other pc and OS 😐
Linux is free, either dual boot or wipe Windows.
I recently upgraded my old GTX770 to a RTX3050, which forced me to install Windows 10 instead of my preferred 8.1 due to lack of drivers. However, I'm sure that I somehow managed to get Steam to work on 8.1 a long time ago, and it worked a couple of weeks ago. Now I don’t remember exactly what I did, but there is a working method.
I also have no wish to upgrade my Win7 gaming PC for the 2 games I own that require steam.
It would be wise to have Steam default to offline mode if you do manage to get it going again.
I don't expect Steam to support long dead OS's but having my PC offline should not break the majority of games as I understand it.
Valve, the parent company of Steam stopped supporting Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 on January 1, 2024. If you're using Windows 8.1, the Steam client will continue to function for sometime without updates, but as the developers cannot guarantee the functionality after the cutoff date as some of the games may stop working in the foreseeable future.
FYI: Steam drops Win7/8/8.1 in 2024
That's why Steam is recommending users to upgrade to Windows 10 or later.
