My general observation was that if the colour of the disc was gold or silver it would work much better in older drives than something with a funky colour. I had pretty good luck with 1x and 2x drives with the compUSA branded CDRs which were dirt cheap in the late 90s.
Also stick with single session burns.

My experience is that the revision of the fx400 does matter. The fx400D and E read cdr fine, but FX400, FX400A, fx400b, and fx400c are quite picky
