EDIT - This board while decent is NOT a great 9X board, I have now switched over to a P5K with all the same add-on cards plus the USB 2.0 on the board works!

I can never leave things alone for long so I've upgraded my P4 retro machine a bit.

Anyway the new specs are the following:
Asus P5N-D
Intel Pentium 4 3.40 @ 4641MHZ
512MB DDR2-667 (2 x 256MB)
Geforce 7900GS 256MB PCI-E
Sound Blaster Audigy
2 x 120GB SSD drives
PCI-E Gigabit LAN card

I had been hanging onto using an FX series card for a long time because HOMM2 throws up a direct draw error and crashes when I run it on the 7000 series PCI-E cards in 98/ME BUT that's really not an issue anymore now that I'm using the latest version of FHEROES2 on my Windows 11 PC. I tried FHEROES2 when it first came out and didn't like it but it's come a long way since and I'll probably just play Heroes 2 this way from now on.

This might be the final iteration of my P4/Windows ME machine for now, I don't think I can squeeze out much more performance without going to a newer Intel or AMD CPU.

Benchmarks:
3dmark2000 - 26575
3dmark2001 - 27409
3dmark2003 - 15866

EDIT - Took a pic, I think the next thing I'm going to do is replace the cooler on the 7900GS with something bigger because even after cleaning the fins and repasting it (the old stuff had turned to stone) it runs pretty damn hot.

How well is that motherboard go in Win9x?

I also intend to redo my PC with the same motherboard and never considered dual booting it with Win9x

I don't think there are win9x drivers for nForce 750i... maybe modded ones. 🤔.

Same goes for that 7900GS with ME pete8475 is using, modified drivers?

Sweet OC by the way.

It's 9x support is AWFUL! The onboard sata/ide does not work properly in 9x, the onboard sound does not work in 9x, the onboard lan does not work in 9x and the usb only runs at 1.1 speed.

I'm using a PCI-E broadcom nic, a soundblater audigy and a promise ultra 133 to work around most of those issues. There are several items flagged in device manager but everything is working nicely in games so I don't really care, I'll take a screenshot later, I'm about to head out for a bit.

Oh also a fan on the motherboard chipset is MUST HAVE, it gets really hot without one. I don't have the Asus fan so I stuck a startech fan on there.

I'm using the 82.69 drivers along with the shutdown patch.

Oh also I bought this thing to try and get some USB 2.0 speeds, it works great in modern motherboards but as soon as the driver installs in ME this machine freezes. One day I'll try with a fresh install of Windows on here.

I'm using both regular PCI slots and I simply can't find any other USB 2.0 PCI-E cards online. Right now that's the only real issue with this machine, USB 1 is dog slow for file transfers, but I can easily slip the SSD out of the front of the machine and into a USB 2 caddy to connect to my Win 11 machine so it's not the end of the world.

I also received a Quadro FX3450 in the mail today, the 7900GS is considerably faster in Doom 3 (~90FPS vs ~48) but otherwise imo the cards are comparable in UT2003, Quake 3 and 3dmark. Until I can find a better cooler for the 7900GS I might run the Quadro instead, the cooler is significantly better on this card.

FX3450 3dmark scores:
3dmark 2000 - 25518
3dmark 2001 - 24209
3dmark 2003 - 11858

Pic sourced from the ebay auction because I'm feeling lazy.

Yeh thats what I thought but after I read your post did a quick google and this post came up as well
https://www.reddit.com/r/windows98/comments/s … h_lga775_boards

Onboard sound not working doesn't really bother me, (anything XP and below will get a Creative card) but if your also having to install additional cards for pretty much everything onboard then I'm out.
Agree it doesn't really matter though if say you only have enough space for 1 PC. It's not like perforce will suffer.

And yeh, got my P5N new with the chipset fan included. Even though they said its optional I didn't think twice about putting it on. If they are going to the expense of including it then I'm not taking the risk to run my board right on the limit!

Yeah it's expansion cards for everything in this pc, and I guess Asus was banking on the downward airflow of a stock intel cooler to blow some air across the chipset heatsink but with the tower cooler I'm using it wasn't getting any.

Played around with various processors last night/today and I've settled on using a 3.6 that is so far stable at 4.8. I've got a bunch of 775 Pentium 4 processors now and most will get to somewhere in the 4.0-4.5 area, this one is the best of what I have so far. This 661 is a C1 stepping and just to see what happens I've ordered a D0 revision of the 651 (can't find a D0 661) on ebay to see what happens with that. 🤣

The old versions of 3dmark run quite nicely on this with a 7900GS:
2000 - 27346
2001 - 27866
2003 - 15986

Rebuilt things yet again this machine now has P5K motherboard and is running nicely at 4.8. One nice thing about this board is USB 2.0 is working at high speed! I also just got in a Gigabyte branded 7900GS with a Zalman cooler and it seems to overclock tremendously well.

Benchmarks are essentially the same, a few points up and down randomly. I'll post a few pics tonight when I can.

EDIT - Running the new 7900GS at 600MHZ Core and 800MHZ (1600MHZ doubled or whatever) ram speed. 3dmark 2003 running a bit quicker than before and Doom 3 is running nicely at ~93fps at 1024x768 Ultra quality.

How is about power consumption @ 4.8Ghz ? Do you have a power measure tool?
Would be interesting, how the cpu performance / watt is developing for the cedar mill cpu compared to it's rival: the core 2 duo.
At stock settings for both cpu's, the smallest core 2 duo E6300 is beating the P4....

Unfortunately I don't have such a tool.

No question Core 2 smashes the P4, but I wanted the fastest P4 I could put together.

A full length 7800GTX arrived today!

Installed and running tests now. This is more than likely the last little thing I'll do with this P4.

Doom 3 now benchmarks at 92.6fps, ultra quality, 1152x864 resolution.

Is it an optical illusion or is your card bending with the back of it in that holder?

It seems quite straight in person, so optical illusion I suppose?

I'll try and find one of my straight metal rulers later for a comparison.

Sounds good Pete. I just wanted to make sure so your card doesn't get damaged.

The plastic part of the fan shroud does get a bit bigger in the middle so perhaps that's part of what gives it that look.

Here's a better wide shot of the whole system. Also I put an envelope beside the card to see if it's straight and it seems pretty good to me. Turns out the vast majority of my tools including my metal rulers are all in storage at the moment.
