Quite a lot of this stuff goes back to XT era. There's a (not hugely interesting) Tatung CGA monitor and a (rather more interesting) NEC Multisync EGA+VGA monitor in the pile, an XT keyboard and some of the cases are XT clones.

I love 'lootbox' lots, but wouldn't personally spend this sort of money on them, particularly not as there are no pics of the business end (rear) of the systems. You could hit gold with working systems full of interesting stuff - or you could have a big pile of non-functioning hardware with no standout bits&pieces on your hands. If that XT clone just has a CGA (clone) adapter inside, a small (broken) MFM HDD and not much else, and those later systems are also just basic office systems with minimal graphics and no sound, this could be a bit disappointing. Of course, they could also contain all kinds of rare and exotic hardware, but that's a long shot.

It's great that you have a father who might be able to help fix stuff, but - as such a father myself - if you want some good quality father-child time fixing up old crap, I'd suggest being a bit more focused: get a single system with contents that have particular meaning to at least one of you and go deep there. You've been posting a lot of topics recently with fairly basic questions about a whole lot of different things. That suggests a huge amount of enthousiasm, but also a bit of a lack of focus. You'd learn more by slowing down and instead of blurting out the first questions that come to mind, first think how you might go about answering them yourself - and if you can't to ask about the process rather than the specific answers you're looking for (i.e. asking for help and tips on how to fish, not just asking for some fish - and some more fish - and hey, is that another fish too? 😉 )

its a community to get help here, vogons dont have a maximum of questions by person. If i ask question, its because i need these answers and i dont find it elsewhere. Nobody know everything dont forget that. My father an me have a lot of focus, i have 45 and my father 70 and he repairs pc and vintage pc and videogames consoles since 1983 for different big company, he still passionated, we dont lose any focus, we buy everything we can, we keep what we want in our collection and sell the others computers or parts we dont need. My fathers and me together have more than 30 pc vintage working build, that are perfectly repaired and working like new. We dont need to be judged by anyone about our purchasing habits or judgment, its insulting coming from you, I am very disappointed by your comments. dont ask me or answer me anymore if you are not interested, that's all. maybe youre just jealous, i dont know, maybe you just cant believe my father and me will create a pcmcia gameport card, i'm sorry you didnt have answer to my questions, my father kniw the answers anyway.

I'm not going to deprive myself of asking questions to please you.

About that lot i'm not so sure, he accepted, but i hesitated, its not just for collecting, i make money too selling that in my city, it works nice, a lot of vintage fanatics.

WTF?

I was just giving some advice on what I would recommend and most definitely not judging. As you've hopefully noticed I've taken the effort to post in your topics where I thought I could help and was intending to continue do so. I most definitely don't know it all though, and don't pretend otherwise. I do admit to misjudging your age as based on your posts I got the impression you were a young teenager like my own son. Regardless of age I'm happy that you have a father who is still capable and willing to do this sort of stuff with you. I'm not jealous, but I'm only a few years older and lost my father quite some time ago. I'd like to think he would have enjoyed similar things if he'd still been around and in good enough mental and physical health.

ok. my english is not great, i need a lot of effort to communicate in english, that's the reason it looks more teenager than adult by moment. My first language is french. I try to be very friendly when i talked here, so it could give impression that i'm younger than i'm am. In 1985 i was already trying card in different xt and at computer, because my father has box of isa cards. But i took a break of that stuff in my life between 2005 to 2019, and we had mostly sold everything we had duting these years, so we have to buy stuff to do vintage pc, so we went in warehouse to buy stuff. my father vintage pc like me, we have fun with it. But in 2020 we were very rusty about all that old tech. But now we are back understand like in these years, at least mostly.
It's ok i'm not angry with you anymore, forget about all of this. That's really fine.

What do you think of my offer ? is it too much ? should i offer more

( another guy offer 500$ canadian)

The seller think about my offer right now.

8 computer, 7 crt monitor et 10 keyboard in total ?

The seller asked me for 400$ for just the Compaq PC and the Tatung. Looks like his pricings aren't quite consistent.. and yes it's crazy too much.. he started talking about prices on eBay and what not.. but come on, listing dirty PCs that God knows what's inside them and their working condition for a sale without any return guarantees.. It's unreasonable IMO.

Are you the guy that sold me the 386 sx motherboard with hdd and fdd connector on the board ? By the way, i love it, it works perfect, thanks
i saw the same username.

I know it was very hard to negociate with him. He show me screenshot of ibm xt keyboard at 600$-800US and more 🤣, i told him it was not realistic. And finally he wants 800$ at the end, he changed his mind 🤣, so i forget about him. Maybe if you are interested, we can split the lot and pay 400$ each and seperate the things together. Let me know. You remembered me you even deliver the 386 motherboard to my home. For 400$ each i would do it with you. Let me know, if interested

Yes I'm the same guy 🙂
I'm in for 400$ and a split. Thing is, he already sold a few pieces of it already.. so if you can get him to show what remains we can assess and decide if it's worth it or not. The two pieces most interesting to me are the Tatung CRT and the Compaq. He shut me down on Facebook, so I guess you'll have to chat with him/her.

That's not terrible if you have money to risk on unknown hardware or if you live in an urban area where larger items are more likely to be desirable to potential other local buyers (I live fairly rural so monitors are not worth anything to me as they are usually not worth shipping) if you are thinking of reselling some of it. Looks like a good mix of 386/486/early Pentium

I thought the Tatung Monitor was EGA when i checked the model on the web ? did i got it wrong ? thanks for answer.

Edit: its really cga we found a document

$500 US is a fair price for all that, but whether or not you should pay it is a really personal decision.

Do you want all that stuff? If you're genuinely going to repair it all and sell it, then as a collector interested in preservation, I think that's a really cool thing to do personally. Just make sure you actually want all this stuff before buying it.

It's very easy in this hobby to end up with stuff you don't actually care about or want. I recently gave away about $1000 in rare stuff because I had collected too much and had a bunch of stuff that I didn't care about at all. Buying feels good, ebay still tempts me to buy more even though I already have everything I actually care about owning. For example, sometimes I think about getting a Sound Blaster Pro 1, but I already have a ton of other Sound Blaster cards that I'm not even using that are just collecting dust. Why would I buy another? I would never use it or care about it.

The things I really care about, the prized gems of my collection that I really love, aren't even anything special. They're just things that I myself really love and have a personal connection to. Buy the stuff you really love, the stuff that moves you, that would be my advice. Don't care about what others think is rare or valuable. Care about the stuff that you personally love deep down.

Of course, if you're into repairing old stuff and reselling it, please do, because everything we save from being scrapped is good.

Hi! me and Wbahnassi, bought the lot together today. We took 1h to 2h to test everything and split, separate the parts and computer and monitor. we took each computer, monitor and keyboard we prefer. Almost everything worked properly:

some picture of my part below.

I kept the two 286 Vectras with ega cards, one of the Compaq Pentium 1, and the XT computer. For the keyboards, i keep the XT IBM keyboard personal.computer, another XT keyboard, 3 ATs and 2 PS2s, and 4 monitors ( 1 broken )

He kept a 386 dx-40 from amd (I already have a dx-33) a compaq Pentium 1, another pentium 1 but generic case 100mhz and a pentium 2 slot one and he took 3 monitors, two vga and the cga (because I have two cga) then 3 at keyboards and 2 ps/2. we tried to split more or less equal value, but above all we took what we really wanted

Thanks renejr902, we had quite some fun today.. It was quite a physical activity hauling the machines down the stairs and organizing them to fit in my cross-over. renejr902 cut his hand in the process, sorry for that man 🙂 Hope it gets better quickly.

The Tatung CGA monitor had a nice knob that switches the display between CGA, inverted CGA, MDA white, green or amber colors. Really lovely. That was my center piece of the entire deal. The other computers are nice too, the 386 is an AMD 40Mhz on an interposer, so it can be removed/installed on any socketed 386 mobo..

I'll clean up all the parts and give them some runs and post photos here. I plan to keep the things I'm missing and relist the other stuff individually for others to pick up. The original seller wanted so badly to get rid of the entire lot, so she was asking high prices for individual items because it would take her longer to get rid of the entire bunch that way.
I don't have this time issue, so I'll list them and let them go whenever they go.

All in all, very happy with this little adventure 🙂
