Alright, my next question about this laptop I have here concerns the video. The video hardware is listed as a C&T F65555 with 2mb of video ram. I'm really not sure of the hierarchy of the C&T chipsets so I'm not sure what kind of performance I can expect from this.

Would anyone happen to know what other cards would be an equivalent for this and where in the grand scheme of things this card resides?

F65555 was a low end video solution in it's day, so don't expect much from it. It'll probably run Windows tasks OK, but I wouldn't bother loading any games on this laptop.

I've noticed that. I have a copy of doom95 something or other that I found on a CD that was in a drive I bought at a thrift store and tried it on this laptop at the full high quality 640x480 and it was...choppy.

I pretty much just use this machine for it's legacy ports as a transfer machine to other devices so using it for games was just a thought. Looks like I'll need to build up another desktop...damn... 😉

I'm gonna take a wild guess that this machine is a Toshiba Tecra 7XX.

Here's an odd thing about the C&T F65555 - it's faster at video in Windows NT4/2000 than 9X. The NT driver's a lot better for gaming, probably because the driver is much more refined by MS themselves I guess.

At least, that i've noticed. There's less visible pageflipping in 16bpp on 2000 on that thing.

reopening this thread as I wonder if there's any support from UNIVBE or something similar.

There's support in the SciTech Display Doctor drivers from 6.53.

Haven't tested. I know the F65545 works with the 5.3a drivers. Doubles FPS and allows "320x400", as well as other higher resolutions.

Low end and in every laptop under the sun

The belief that even a high end laptop didn’t need any performance was still in full effect back then, power consumption at least got some attention

The C&T video chipsets F65540+ had advanced LCD signalling for the best picture, and it was the most cost effective.

Some Compaq Armada high-end laptops got an S3 Virge, others got a ATI Rage 3D. Those were the $5-10k laptops though.
