I can't play it with DOSBOX, what should I do, it never passes to the first screen when I'm typing fifa to run it on dos prompt. Should I make some setting for DOSBOX to be able to run it?

Now this is one of the holy grails of DosBox emulation, CPU seletion. Not may games depend on it, but FIFA does. Thanks WD.

A question: does the game work in official CVS versions or we still have to wait for the next release?

cvs should work as well
just be sure to make a new configfile and use the prefetch cpu setting

Alright! It works. It needed some tweaking in my particular case. For some reason the included sound setup program (CONFIG.EXE) wouldn't work, so I needed to fiddle with the SB16 default values until they matched the ones stored.

The game *only* works if you manually choose cputype=386_prefetch from the DOSBOX.CONF file, otherwise the game makes DOSBox crash.

This small caveats apart, it works as well as it did on my old 486.

FWIW, config.exe works in the windows xp ntvdm.

I'll be damned! It does! I tried under both versions of DOSBox (v0.72 and CVS) and with VDMSound too.

But it never crossed my mind to run it under XP "as is". 😊

Wrong, pentium should work, too.

Didn't try Pentium, I stand corrected. However, what I wanted to emphasize is that the "auto" option wouldn't work with this game.

It's not supposed to work. You can't detect prefetch tricks without slowing down everything to a crawl.

Are there any other games that could benefit from these new options? I'd like to test them as well.

prefetching is useful for a few very old games (fifa is an odd exception but
has been fully analyzed) like one of the Terminator games, and Savage.
The nice thing is that those won't run on any other emulator that i'm aware of.

FIFA 94 does work with both pentium_slow and 386_prefetch settings. Runs just like my old PC did... From FMV intro to actual ingame with voice comments.

The only thing that doesn't work in DOSBox is (as stated above) the config.exe utility.

But I could almost swear it ran just fine with that 'core=prefetch' build that wd released quite some time ago (couldn't find it ATM, though).

Was it supposed to work in the latest builds (tried the 14.08.2008 one) or has something changed and it's not behaving as expected?

i recall that config called some non-existing interrupt, but might have been caused by the prefetch stuff as well.
I don't have config.exe anymore. So I pass on this one.

Sorry, it didn't/doesn't work for config.exe, unless I'm doing something wrong here.
