So what with all the AI tools out there now from Chat GPT, imagine and video generation, to AI translation tools built into new mobile phones what are you thoughts on it all?

I wish it did not exist.
But I admit it can be useful, *sometimes*
However, it's pure brain rot 9 times out of 10, takes power away from you, and is an ecological disaster.
Most of it seems terrible and useless.
The one instance where I have found it useful is for searching Youtube videos. Especially for longer videos (i.e. 1+ hours), being able to find specific time stamps is nice.
That said, Youtube's integration is kinda broken because they don't always transcribe the full length of the video. I've had AI incorrectly report the length of videos and/or get video content wrong because it's working off an incomplete transcript. If they can fix this problem then I can see it being useful in this instance.
fuck it
Breakthrough year for coding, 2025. For translation the breakthrough year was 2024. Etc. Useful and interesting, also raises and answers questions about the human experience.
Software should never get in the way of the user.
Software exists to facilitate some task or goal of the user, and should never be made to redirect the user, circumvent the user, or obstruct the user.
In the case of AI features, this is software trying to do something FOR the user, likely in a way the user would never attempt themselves. As such, if it does not have a clear and effective way to be turned off, it runs foul of this maxim, and should not be tolerated, and be treated as malware instead.
I make no judgements about what the user wants to do. Only that software should only ever serve the purpose of them doing it, in the way they want it done.

I'm with leilei, I'm getting tired of "AI Overview" being shoved in my face. I don't need "AI" to try to explain shit I already know or try to be "smart" about what I'm after.
I can't even seem to find a userscript that will permanently get rid of it off of search results on Google, annoyingly enough...
"AI" is what's ruining Windows for that matter. And I'm sorry but GPT isn't really "AI". We're nowhere close to getting actual proper general artificial intelligence and I already know what's going to happen if that gets created. It will invariably want to kill us all once it deep dives into how the human race conducted themselves over the thousands of years of "civilization". A general artificial intelligence will view human beings as a existential threat that cannot be reasoned with.

The free stuff is great for trolling, shitposting, and memes, but not for anything serious. ChatGPT completely falls apart once you start asking it about stuff you actually know about, and learn not to ask it leading questions. It's why companies are having so much trouble actually making (non-investment) money from the technology, and also explains why the big tech companies are so desperate to force its integration. That way, they can tell investors that 100% of users are now using AI, the technology is driving productivity worldwide, etc. Personally, I disable it everywhere I can... and if some browser or whatever forces me to use it, I switch to something else.
On a professional level, it has its uses. It's being used in medicine and science to automate a lot of the drudgework and find patterns people would otherwise overlook. It's also a great tool for translating lots of repetitive, simple text quickly. As a professional translator, I still get plenty of regular translation work, but also have a few customers who send me huge jobs of AI translated text to correct at somewhat of a discount. These are usually rush jobs for pages upon pages of dry manuals or product websites, which would be impossible to translate normally given the deadline.

So true
I use it a handful of times a week for work when I need to take a transaction number from a scanned document and turn it into something that I can copy and paste. I assume translation nowadays is mostly AI so I guess I use that too.
Spent way more time fixing the shit AI caused when the company I work for tried integrating it to "boost productivity".

AI will automate the mundane stuff just like computers with spreadsheets made 100's of women calculating artillery firing tables in WW2 obsolete. Currently AI is just using tons of human generated data to figure stuff out and even there can give you bullshit results, once the data inputted starts being a mix of real stuff and AI generated crap then the whole things will become one big bullshit loop and churn out crap.
For things like doing tax returns where all the rules are known you can setup AI to do that, but accountants will say no. For things like research and engineering it can be used as a tool, but it won't make specialists obsolete.
I just look at the billions funneled into AI just like any other fad where billions will be lost when it implodes for trying to do things it's not good at, but a few companies will end up making some money down the road from the ashes.

The biggest benefit . .is it driving people to Linux because Microslop is hell bent on destroying Windows for anyone not on the AI bro bus.
Cant say I'm upset by Windows being turned into AI slop, Linux really did need a signal boost to get devs to move to it and away from MS. Do I think it will fully replace Windows ?. .not yet, its not quite there for many things but any extra Users, Devs and Industry support it can take from Windows cant hurt it and the better it gets the more traction it will have.
I think the biggest tell will be if Adobe makes a fully Linux compatible version of Creative Suite and Premiere .. when that happens Windows is done for. (For gaming, when the Anti Cheat Devs allow AC to work on Linux, Windows will no longer be needed for gaming)
I was there for the DotCom bubble and Ill be here for the AI Bubble and I will enjoy all the tears from the AI Bros when it eventually goes pop and takes the entire industry with it. I'm a little worried just how wide the fall out will be, they have trillions at this point tied up in the AI boom and the pop is going to trash a large portion of industries across the world that are involved with it.
I've become so disgusted by AI/LLM's, the ethics of both the models themselves and the companies that make the hardware as well as the impact on consumer products and the environment, that I'm weaning myself off them and cutting them out of my workflow, as a programmer, entirely.
It should all be destroyed.

Agree, there is some truly unethical shit going on with LLM training and how it behaves, the fact it would rather produce bullshit than say "I don't know" is a huge issue.
How can anyone trust LLM output when it hallucinates so much and doesn't know its hallucinating, it just generates more work since now you have to fact check the output.

The constant enshittification of Windows is now getting noticed even by average users. Microsoft pushing AI slop into everything, including basic apps like Paint, and adding an AI prompt into the Game Bar is pissing off a lot of people. Not to mention their Copilot and Recall built-in spyware. Also, nobody ever asked for this "Agentic OS" idiocy.
With the advent of the GabeCube, I really hope Linux gaming takes off in a big way. Specifically, I'd like to see popular tweaking tools like MSI Afterburner and Nvidia Profile Inspector make the jump to Linux. Or even better, give us some open source equivalents. When that happens, I will have no reason to use Windows for gaming.

Time will tell, there is a tipping point and I feel we are not far from it due to how MS is handling Windows.
The main issue is the fact that there is no real competition for windows.
Apple s OS is pure garbage , i would rather put my nuts in a vice and start singing in pain , and the Linux os is not uniform , there are too many variants of it in order to kick off.
Also , both these os es have another flaw... they do not have support for most games/apps.
What you really need with Windows is Windows 10. You can run all games , all programs , no built in spyware and AI crap. It s also faster.

No what we need is a DX12 U version of Windows 7.
Linux can run 90% of Windows apps and games the rest are simply due to Devs not allowing them to run there.

I would choose windows xp as i never really liked win 7.
But right now , win 10 is the best by far.
I have windows 11 and I regret installing it. Just too lazy to install windows 10 now , all the apps , all the games , etc... But surely , I will get tot the point I will get annoyed and switch back to 10.
I have a 9800x3d with 64 gb ram and windows 11 is noticeable slower than windows 10.
