Hello !

Am I the only one that like running UT99 on my old machines, with various low specs (K6/PII/PIII, Voodoo 1/2/3 , old Geforces...etc) ?

When I do , I am always sad that I cannot really play offline because:
- Most bro on the normal world play with nowadays machines (and stil use low settings to have 1000000 fps !)
- A lot of server has heavy Mutators, too heavy for a K6 (even SmartScoreBoard is heavy)
- Server bandwith / tickrate is usually set for high-end network PC (65t/s, 25kbps ++), which also stresses our old machines
- Some Mutators /Maps uses Textures that crash on Voodoo 2 (texture size...)

This is why I decided to create a Server for this exact purpose !

To join: 5.196.92.222:5090
Or search for: Vogons SubGHZ DM [By ChaCha]

I literally just released it, and I will continue updating it untill it become a nice place for our old machines.
I need feedbacks please ! With any kind of machine (old, mid, new...), and OS.

Current State:
- Vanilla Maps/Weapons, DM gametype
- Good old MapVote
- NewNet for a better gameplay (might remove it later if it impact performances)
- Tick is like in old days (20), so is ClientRate (5000)
- Support most Skins / Bonus Pack
- Double Jump
- Recent machines are not blocked, they are force to run like an old one (or probably worst : ) )

Known issues:
- First download of content might stall, just reconnect
- In case of missmatch, clear your UT99 cache
- Machine performance measurement might not be perfect, I need feedbacks to make it a real "subGHz" server

Planned Features:
- Themed opening Panel + Sound
- Maybe a better ScoreBoard but only if it's light and close to the original one (to have coutry flags at least)
- Make this server only running at certain planned time, to increase chance of meeting peoples

Nice idea 😀
There were a lot of nice custom maps back in the days. I'm quite sure they would still work for Voodoo2 and this kind of old cards.

There's no vogons discord because that'd mean:
- Additional moderation upkeep (a lot of bad habits on this forum already)
- Unsupported platforms not being able to Discord = closed platform information vacuum issue (alternate light clients will risk ToS violations and have your account nuked)
- Dying forum as a community gets more dependent onto discord (see: any forum that gets a discord)
- Surprise mandatory phone 2FA will gatekeep.

I could connect from my K6-2 running Win98, UT version 436 , but not from Linux on the same computer UT also version 436.
It downloaded the few mods, then didn't connect in the game.
When running Linux, this computer can connect to other 436 servers and doesn't have any firewall.
So I don't think the problem is on my side.
Edit : same problem with FreeBSD.

Hi @nali !

Thank you for the feedback !
I have a running problem with content uploading, that I am trying to fix, so this problem is definitly not on your side !
On my machine I have seen the same behaviour you described: it downloads a few parts and then stop.

But appart from that it *should* work !
Havn't figured out yet why, but I know that if you reconnect 1 or 2 time it ends up downloading everything and connect.

Question: On your K6 on windows, how were the performances compared to a standalone game ?

Hopefully I will figure out what is this issue soon.
Its hard because there is no error both in client and server side, it just stops.
I believe its an issue on my network, I will trace it to a lower level this weekend 😀.

Cheers

I just saw in the README of Linux 436 UnrealGold version :
"- Cannot connect to a legitimate Unreal Gold win32 server.
This will not change."
So this may explain why I can't connect to your server if it runs on Windows.

Just now I'm playing with my K6-2.
Memory could be an issue back in the days, but today it's easy to have 512 Mo.
It use 50 Mo ram at iddle.
Of course Nvidia and Via drivers version can make a difference. I use 45.23 for the TNT on both OS.

About perf on the K6-550 in UT 436 flyby, all in 800x600 :
It was a pretext to make some real tests 😀

- Win2000 TNT2 D3D (Nvidia drivers 45.23) average 18.01
- Win2000 TNT2 OpenGL (Nvidia drivers 45.23) average 11.90
- Win98 TNT2 D3D (Nvidia drivers 45.23) average 19.95
- Win98 TNT2 OpenGL (Nvidia drivers 45.23) average 13.11
- Linux Sarge TNT2 (Nvidia drivers 71.74) average 17.31 fps
------------
- Win2000 Voodoo2 average 22.58 fps
- Win98 Voodoo2 average 21.34 fps
- Linux Sarge Voodoo2 average 25.34 fps
------------
- Win2000 GeForce 4 MX 440 D3D (Nvidia drivers 45.23) average 18.66 fps
- Win2000 GeForce 4 MX440 OpenGL (Nvidia drivers 45.23) average 15.84 fps
- Linux Sarge GeForce 4 MX440 (Nvidia drivers 71.74) average 15.66 fps
------------
3DMark99 800x600 16 bits
- Win98 TNT2 1853 pts / 5213 CPU / Game1 22.7 fps / Game2 15.7 fps
- Win98 Voodoo2 2028 pts / 5312 CPU / Game1 26.1 fps / Game2 16.6 fps
- Win2000 TNT2 1669 pts / 4721 CPU / Game1 20.1 fps / Game2 14.3 fps
- Win2000 GeForce 4 MX440 1612 pts / 4714 CPU / Game1 20.5 fps / Game2 13.3 fps
------------
I'm quite sure the K6 is the reason of the poor results, it's a funny cpu but not very powerful. There's 512 Mo ram, more than enough for the games the Cpu can run.
If I use a Ati 8500 DV the perfs are about the same as the GeForce 440. Or less 😀
It's a pain to have it working on Windows, but on linux I get 13.90 fps in UT flyby.

Not sure if you know, but there's a way to have the fps counter automatically in Unreal/UT.
Add a text file named for example timedemo.txt in System. Inside just write "timedemo 1".
Then launch the game with the shortcut c:/games/UT/System/UnrealTournament.exe -exec=timedemo.txt

Thanks for tips and feedbacks, un fortunatly these numbers aren't from my server 😀.
I tried to connect using my machine (Pentium 3 900 / Voodoo 2 SLI) and it works fine on both Win98 and Linux (debian Etch), using stock 436 client.
Can you try again and PM me the logs please ?
Again, if its just stuck at downloading, just disconnect and retry...

Note: Unreal GOLD != Unreal Tournament , Linux UT client has no problem connecting on Win32 server.
But anyway, this server runs un Linux / 469e...

Cheers

"these numbers aren't from my server" -- right, I think I did not read correctly ...
But there was no one when I connected from Win98, so I think perf numbers make no sense without oppponants or bots.

"Unreal GOLD != Unreal Tournament , Linux UT client has no problem connecting on Win32 server. " I know Unreal Gold is not Unreal Tournament. What I mean is Unreal Gold Linux version is based on UT99 436 code. That's why we must first installing UT99 before Gold.
Many files in System and Textures are symlinks to the UT99 repertory.
I have also noticed UT99 MUST be installed in the default location /usr/local/games, of Unreal Gold install won't find it while trying to install.
I even wrote a small script to replace the symlinks in UG to the real files from UT. It allows me to use a tgz archive to make tests on different computers, without having to reinstall from iso.
It may be ugly, but it works.

I would be curious to know how you got the Voodoo2 working on Etch. I can't get the 3dfx module to load, that's why I use Sarge.
Also no "cat /proc/mtrr" ...
And where did you get your libglide ? For years Debian provided a libglide version working only for Voodoo1. So I use another one from a RedHat rpm. The package libglide2 pretend to be for Voodoo2, but it never works and apps complain for a SST non existant, which is Voodoo1. IIRC ...

For now my K6 is busy moving 100 Go betweens disks, because those disks don't work on a modern computer (click click).
I'll try joining the server later.

I can confirm this line:
- Recent machines are not blocked, they are force to run like an old one (or probably worst : ) )

My modern Win11 machine gets throttled down to 25-55 FPS on the server - will try on my Athlon x2 / 8600GT XP SP2 system at some point this week and see how that fares!
