So far I haven't figured out how to have both of these joyport devices work without needing to go into the game controller setting every time I swap controller and unistall/add the one I am using - If that's even possible.

In DOS since both devices work in analog mode everything is fine, just swap and go. In windows 98 if I add both controllers, after changing the controller the 3D pro driver ends up replacing the gravis gamepad device with another copy of the 3d pro controller (I assume because of auto-detection) so there are two 3d pro joysticks in the game controller settings.

The conclusion I have come to is that in digital mode inside windows 98 the 3d pro can't share the joyport with other joyport devices unless you remove the 3d pro as a controller. Just checking if there are any workarounds out there that I wasn't able to find.

Once digital mode gets involved you're now dealing in the finicky API realm.

Screenshots of your configuration and elaboration on what Gravis Gamepad and gameport card you use may be helpful.

The gameport is an SB16 CT1770 non-PnP, the gravis gamepad is the classic 4 button analog

In terms of configuration I will get a screenshot tonight but it's nothing special, just both controllers added to game controllers control panel in win98

In that case, as I alluded to, the only way to keep things consistent is to go all-analog. There is a reason why digital controls on gameport (or USB) need their own unique driver package; one cannot rule out any being predatory (especially Microsoft's) because they must interface with the API instead of the hardware directly.
