Where I am REALLY growing retro-jaded are console games. Not only are the better ones becoming so outrageously collectible I am starting to make a killing selling my copies, but the ones officially preserved are available for easy purchase in emulated form and in my age I find that convenience more compelling than the "insert cartridge" experience. Not that I have given up on it altogether: just my tastes have refined to my select favorites (i.e. LucasArts developments, semi-unique offerings on 3DO), simple pick-up-and-play genres like Sega arcade games or 90s-vintage EA Sports, and a few others not available for digital purchase that I am interested in playing with my children.

console games often fall into the category of games i want to like but somehow don't, enough anyway - that goes for almost anything even new games, and i used to love emulation, well, i still do - but i just don't play the games for long now... but i want to, except i don't - which mean i like the idea of it more than the actuality!

One thing I used to really enjoy in the early-to-mid 1990s, and which I now have almost no patience for (beyond the occasional nostalgic revisit to real favourites) was cinematic game introduction sequences, cutscenes and voice work.

That also applies to modern video games. And to games which routinely involve clicking through loads of text. I want 99% of my game time to be hands-on-controllers, doing things.

Oh indeed, and i used to get annoyed seeing someone play while just rushing through the text, i used to think "but you're losing the story, you're just reducing this to mechanics", and now i sometimes do it myself! I actually think it s a game design problem, games like deus ex do it well - there are some conversations and lots of background, dip in as much as you like

cutscenes - yes i agree but some i still like even now, even when i have seen them lots. the ones that annoy me are the ones at the start of the game - sometimes 4,5, even more advert like short videos about which sound or graphic systems, which software house, etc etc. In fact i think ive abandoned even trying one of two games because the post-load videos and game set ups were just too irritating

As a teenager I used to play the Sims for hours on end. As an adult it feels like a chore after 30 minutes.

The irony is not lost on me.

i admit i laughed. its like when young you want to grow up fast and think adults who suggest it isn't that great, or to enjoy being a kid, are wrong - and then when adult its too late to either change or to even go back and say "you were kinda right" to those views you dismissed earlier
