Cool game! I think there was a demo version, too! Might be a start to experiment with.

I am not sure. I have English version, but I see no config option to change it. I suspect the language is built into the supplied *.hag files

Why do you need English subtitles for a game that already exists in English?

want to use english subs on german version
Not sure if this is correct, but AI tells me this:
If you To get English subtitles with German audio, you would need to selectively swap files between your English and German installations.
What these files do:
.HAG (Hierarchical Archive Group): These are the main data containers used by the M4 engine. They typically store the game's logic, scripts, and text (subtitles). Files like SECTION1.HAG through SECTION8.HAG contain the specific data for each global location.
.M4E: These files generally contain engine-level assets or executable data specifically for the M4 engine.
.BNK (Bank): These are audio archives. They store the digitized speech and sound effects used in the game.
How to attempt the swap:
If you have both the English and German versions of the game, you can try to "frankenstein" a version together. Note that this is an experimental manual mod and may cause the game to crash.
Start with the English Version: Use the English game as your base installation. This ensures the menu, interface, and subtitles default to English.
Locate Audio Banks: In your German game folder, find the .BNK files. These contain the German voice acting.
Replace Audio: Copy the German .BNK files into the English game's directory, replacing the English versions.
Keep English Scripts: Do not replace the .HAG files. The .HAG files contain the text scripts; keeping the English .HAG files is what ensures the subtitles remain in English.

It's pretty obviously not true as the BNK file is only 6KB
