This is my eclectic collection of every game I can remember playing on my first PC, with matching cover art to what releases we had.
I still have Lego Rock Raiders (disc), Air Tactics (disc), Gunman Chronicles (borrowed from a friend), Dark Colony, and most importantly my beloved StarCraft, which became pretty much the only one of these I played beyond about 2003.
I also borrowed the original release of Unreal and Half-Life. I think at that time my dad was helping me install games and he concluded they 'didn't work', so they went back to my friend. I remember Unreal running but it was "too dark" - maybe starting out in a dank 240p software rendered prison with sunlight beaming onto the CRT wasn't the best combination. ᴬⁿᵈ ᴵ ᵗʰᶦⁿᵏ ᴵ ʷᵃˢ ˢᶜᵃʳᵉᵈ ᵒᶠ ᶦᵗ ᵃˢ ʷᵉˡˡ ˡᵒˡ. Got nothing at all out of Half-Life which is strange, considering it always defaults to software renderer and Gunman Chronicles later worked with the same engine (although at what must have been sub-10 FPS). Dad was probably looking for any excuse to not fill his HDD with ~500MB games 😉
I distinctly remember getting an ant game as well which didn't run and had to be returned, which had me absolutely devastated. Looking back it almost certainly must have been Empire of the Ants (2000). Now this one makes sense, as it really needed a proper D3D accelerator...at that point the Virge couldn't pretend any more. rip.
Special mention to the Bhs games compendium II which is apparently a total nonentity, can't see a single mention of it so I archive.org'd it myself. Was just filled with shareware, mostly of very questionable quality. But a few of them got a lot of mileage, anyone remember playing any of these? My dad was still playing the BrainWave games and Missile Attack! years later.
