My Home page that houses the CHKCPU CPU Identification utility and The Unofficial K6-2+ / K6-III+ BIOS page gets a new home. 😀
For more than 25 years this “Jan's PC Upgrade problems Page” could be found at http://web.inter.nl.net/hcc/J.Steunebrink/ but my internet provider stopped supporting these traditional homepages. So I moved my website to a new domain at http://www.steunebrink.info

For now, when you use the old url, you will be automatically redirected to the new. But in the future only the new url will be valid.

I welcome you all on my new homepage whenever you need specific retro PC upgrade information or a patched socket 7 BIOS with K6-2+/K6-III+ and 128GB HDD support.

Regards, Jan

Indeed, thanks to you I was able to choose a Socket 3 board for an AM5x86 <-- which happened to be included with a Super Socket 7 board purchase <-- which I was able to verify supported the K6-III+ modified K6-2+ before purchase, had a chipset (referring to the Socket 3) capable of supporting L1 write-back cache all at the same time! I don't have any experience with 486's and not much with the K6, so being able to minimize mistakes was a real help.

Thanks a million!

Thank you all for the nice words. 😀

I just noticed that the redirect from the old to the new url doesn't work anymore.
So my website is now only available via the new url:

Occasionally, I’m still working on my K6plus support project and a few days ago I’ve updated my K6plus page and added several patched BIOSes to he list.

I reviewed and re-tested a number of patched socket 7 BIOSes that I worked on in past. These BIOSes are now released and available for download for the following motherboards:

- Asus P55TVP4
- Asus TX97-XV
- Elitegroup P5TX-Bpro
- Iwill XA100
- Shuttle HOT-571
- Tekram P5T30-B4
- Tyan S1592

I also updated some, earlier released, patched BIOSes with additional bugfixes. These new patched versions are for:

- Chaintech 5SIM
- QDI Titanium IB+
- PCChips M577 / Ampron PM9900
- Shuttle HOT-569
- Shuttle HOT-569A

As usual, each patched BIOS comes with a PATCH.TXT file that documents the changes I’ve made.

Cheers, Jan

My K6plus support page has been updated with new or updated patched BIOSes for the following boards:

- DFI 586ITBD
- QDI Titanium IB
- QDI Titanium IIB V2.0
- Superpower SP-A586B
- Tekram P5T30-B4

So a small update this time, but one that marks the completion of a lengthy project to expand the SpeedEasy logic of the jumperless QDI Titanium ‘B’ boards.
Thanks to beta testing by several Vogons members, patched K6plus BIOSes are now released for the QDI Titanium IB, IB+, and IIB V2.0. A patched Titanium IIIB BIOS is also on the way and is presently being beta tested. However, a second beta tester is very welcome so send me a PM if you have a Titanium IIIB and like to join the test team. 😀

A special thanks to scorp (Necroware) for his help with testing the many BIOS beta versions on his Titanium IB. His discovery of which of the 31 possible General Purpose Output lines on the southbridge allowed software control of Vcore values below 2.8V, was crucial in developing a patch with 2.0V-2.5V Vcore setting for the K6-2(+)/III(+).

For todays (16/12/2024) update of my K6plus support page, I’ve added BIOSes for the following boards:

- Soltek SL-56G5/56G1/56G2
- Elitegroup P5SD-A
- Elitegroup P5TX-LA
- QDI Titanium IIIB
- Soyo SY-5XA(5)/5XAE(5)

The SL-56G BIOS is the REV Z4 from Soltek, the other 4 are patched K6plus BIOSes.
I like to thank the Vogons members who have tested these BIOSes on their board.

Cheers, Jan

Amazing work thankyou Jan! I use the BIOS you did for me regularly - it was a good retro machine before, but you made it great 👍

Thanks to testing by various Vogons members, I was able to add some new and updated patched BIOSes today (May 12, 2025).
You can now download BIOSes for these boards from my K6plus support page:

Acorp 5VIA77
AOpen AX5T
Asus SP97-V
Lucky Star 5MVP3 Rev:2.x
Shuttle HOT-566

In addition, I’ve finished patching BIOSes for:
Soyo SY-5XA with 2Mbit flashchip
TMC TI5TT.
I’m looking for additional testers for these, so please send me a PM if you like to join the test team.

Cheers, Jan

Time for another update of the K6plus BIOS repository (August 27, 2025).
You can now download new or updated patched BIOSes for these boards:

- Chaintech 5HTM0
- Gigabyte GA-586S2
- QDI P5MVP3/A3
- Tekram P5M4-M+
- TMC TI5TT

The new patch J.3 BIOS for the QDI Advance 3 P5MVP3/A3 board fixes a very nasty bug that fed 3.5V Vcore to the CPU when a manual 2.0V selection was made in the SpeedEasy menu of this jumperless board! Now the correct 2.0V is supplied to the CPU.
Note that this bug was already present in the original V2.0SL and V3.0SL BIOS versions but was never discovered, probably because these BIOS versions didn’t support the K6plus.

In addition, I’ve finished patching BIOSes for:
- ECS P5SD-B Rev 1.1(a)
- ECS P5TX-B Rev 2.0
- Soyo SY-5XA with 2Mbit flashchip

I’m looking for additional testers for these, so please send me a PM if you like to join the test team.

Cheers, Jan

Does anyone know what happened to https://www.steunebrink.info ?

Hi,

My website is still on-line, but doesn’t support secure access via https (yet). So starting the url with https://www..... Will give you a ‘not found’ error on most modern browsers.

Typing http://www.steunebrink.info/ or just www.steunebrink.info will get you on my homepage.
Note that my website is still an old static site, containing only fixed html pages. A database for storing user access data is not used and sending or receiving personal data is not possible. In addition, any form of cookies aren’t used either.

I am looking into updating my website to a more modern site that scales well on smaller screens, and I will definitely start using https support then. But at the moment I believe using http only is still safe for the present static form.

Cheers, Jan

In addition, I’m looking for testers for these patched BIOSes:

- ECS P5SD-B Rev 1.1(a)
- ECS P5TX-B Rev 2.0
- PCPartner/Vtech MB520NH, VXB810DS, VXB820DS, and VXB830DS
- Soyo SY-5XA with 2Mbit flashchip

Please send me a PM if you like to test one of these.

OMG please don't get a responsible design or be very careful with it at least! I tried to get my website kind of responsible, but this doesn't work very well because the fixed design and all the table based content made it nearly impossible. With your website's design it would basically work but it's not really possible with tables (f.e. your K6plus BIOS List [table]). In contrast to this HTTPS should be no problem, but I would keep it also accessible via HTTP.

If I were you I would add some kind of menu at the top - but that's all, the rest is very fine! OK, I would correct the few HTML errors, the SGML parser throws out for your pages - starting with adding a document type declaration.

And not to forget: Thx for your great work...again and again and again!

kind regards
soggi

Hello soggi,

Thanks for warning me in advance about using a responsive web-design.

I haven’t started on re-building my website yet, but the idea is to use the Joomla CMS. Joomla uses Bootstrap to get a good working design that responds well to changing screen sizes/resolutions.

I’ve build a website with Joomla before, but this was without the use of large tables. So I’m curious how and if I can use the K6plus BIOS table in Joomla.

A menu at the top of the screen is a great idea and is already on my whish list. I know how to make this menu fixed in Joomla, so that it always stays in view and doesn’t scroll away with the page.

I hope to have time for this re-design in the second half of this year.

With friendly greetings,
Jan

Hey Jan,

nice to read your fast answer!

I just can tell you from my point of view and my experiences with all this stuff in the last 10-15 years. Hopefully I don't forget something.

You have to ask yourself what's the benefit for you and the visitors of your site, will something be better with a CMS and do you really need such a bloated system for your project? Is it worth it to always have a look on it if it's not beeing hacked? Keep in mind that HTML 4.01 (Strict) is supported very well by all platforms and devices.

I just had a look on your page with my mobile phone and have to say it looks very good for a classic HTML site, the site and especially the tables aren't broken, the text is just too small - have a look at my page, it is broken on mobiles, but it doesn't bother me because the content is for computer users (with a resolution of 1024*600 at least) and it will never be possible to put this kind of design into a responsive design. I also already designed a small HTML page with responsive design, but it doesn't have so many columns in its tables and doesn't have such a menu at the top and on the left side.

Keep in mind that with the topic (BIOSes for old motherboards) there are also users with old computers, old browsers and JavaScript disabled who want to access your site - this is easily possible, especially with the HTTP version, but also with the HTTPS version and a suitable browser. I wouldn't break this.

You don't need a fixed menu, but even this is possible with CSS...just start with a simple menu and then go further, if you want to.

I'm very sure, I forgot a lot...just let me know if you're interested into "keep pure HTML". 😉

kind regards
soggi

Hi soggi,

Thanks for sharing your views on the use of classic HTML sites.
You gave me a lot to think about, for how I’m going to maintain my homepage.

When I started with my homepage in 1997, I just learned myself basic HTML and simply used Microsoft notepad as my HTML editor.
Although I’m using a better editor now (Notepad++), I’m still maintaining my homepage in pure HTML. The only recent addition is a “main.css” style-sheet where I put the style rules in for the whole website, including a new font-style for better readability.

Although I’m now using php and MySQL for another website, your “keep pure HTML” idea for my homepage appeals to me. Therefor I have decided to keep my homepage “pure” for the foreseeable future. 😉
But I still want to add https without breaking http access.

Regards, Jan
