Hi,
I would like to setup PCem to run a virtual Windows XP 32-bit machine for playing old school games. I am not sure about what specs I should go for and where I should obtain files.

My modern-day Windows 11 machine uses X570 AORUS MASTER, AMD Ryzen 9 5900X, with AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX graphics. It seems that AMD graphics, along with Windows 11, has difficulty running old school games.

I wish to play games such as: Empires: Dawn of the Modern World (2003), America: No Peace Beyond the Line (2001), and No Man's Land: Fight for Your Rights! (2003). I have tried GOG.com games, PCGamingWiki, YouTube tutorials, and the internet, but have been unable to get such old school games running on my current Windows 11 machine.

I need guidance on setting up a descent Windows XP machine in PCem and I need guidance where I should obtain necessarily files from.

Kind regards,
Brad.

PCem can barely run Empire Earth, so I don't think the spiritual sequel Empires is happening. Bear in mind the best PCem can emulate is a P2/K6 Voodoo3 PCI system which puts it around 2001 at best for compatibility (for the most part), 2003 games are going to be very hit or miss with how they use DirectX 9 as Voodoo3 was very obsolete by that point - and then there's the whole disc drm situation.

A*M*E*R*I*C*A could probably run though. :x

The thing is that the 2003 games may not be playable with what PCem offers (I think a Voodoo3 at best?). And even if it did offer, you might fall into the same set of hardware and software problems with XP that your Windows 11 is posing.

Overall all the original and GOG releases work on Windows 11, you will need some tinkering for what's not working for you.

America probably uses DX7 so the Voodoo might be capable to some level.

Same for 86Box as well.

pcem emulate pentium 2 450 mhz at max and for lot's of cpus, you can emulate at most between 233 and 350 mhz.
it's not sufficient for lots of game in 2000 in xp era.

Hi! According to Mobygames these games seem to expect Windows 98SE as the OS.
Which is good, because Windows 9x can easily be installed on CF cards and Thin Clients or x86 internet set-up boxes.
(Win 9x doesn't check for removable media bit on CF cards and DMA access for IDE is optional/disabled by default.)
So maybe that's an acceptable alternative to emulation.
There are many kinds of early Thin Clients with weird CPUs that are equivalent to a Pentium MMX or Pentium II in terms of performance.
Later models are quite powerful also, but the hardware is more from XP era.
So an SSD or DOM might be needed as a HDD substitute instead.

Use Virtual Box 5 instead.
