While testing a handful of emulators on my "new" Windows NT 4.0 PC, I discovered that KGen98 was actually usable. It's a DOS program, so I didn't expect much from it on NT - however, I successfully played through a significant chunk of Sonic 3 & Knuckles with it.
The included "readme" file states that a real Sound Blaster is required, and indeed, I have yet to get this emulator working with SBEMU or VSBHDA. Luckily, VDMSound can coax it into producing audio. The last release of it to support Windows NT 4.0 is 2.0.4, which can be downloaded from the SourceForge repository.
Once VDMSound is installed, the only issues I encounter are a fair amount of input lag and a half-second delay in the generated audio. These quirks are most likely the result of running this program in the NTVDM; I didn't experience them on DOS. Either way, this emulator works well enough to handle the short bursts of Sonic I play from time to time.

I've come back to the thread where I wrote my first post to make my final contribution to this forum. My words have been willfully misinterpreted on several occasions, leaving me unable to partake in any intelligent conversation. Not only that: there's a freak running around here, calling anything she disagrees with "fascist". My home country didn't spend 5 years under Nazi occupation for people like her to casually downplay this horrific ideology. Needless to say, I'm done.
