this post is about a successful up grade of an OEM ATI Rage 128 Pro to a full 128bit 32MB card
so while staring at those empty footprints, i couldn't help my self but wonder what if i just add the missing components!!!
unable to restrain my self, i butchered another ATI rage 128 pro to get the exact RAM and all the rest of the components,
with some patience and some soldering skills, i managed to put everything in place..... and .... slapped the card in my pentium 4
and voila.....nothing changed!!! still 64bit 16MB !!!
then i noticed that the BIOS reference on my 64bit card is not the same as the one am seeing on the net
mine is "73108" and the 32MB is "73109"
so i downloaded the ATI dos flasher and the right ROM from theRetroWeb and slapped the thing again in my pentium
and this time ...........it worked the card is showing 128bit and 32MB of Vram 😁
so i headed to 3DMARK99 to get the final verdict
take look at the performance gain i have now
so indeed upgrading an OEM ATI rage 128 pro is possible by simply popoulating the empty footprints, byt the way i used 100nf for all the missing ceramic caps.
and one last thing, i still dont know whats the difference between these two cards
they look identical beside the branding one is ULTRA the other is PRO!!
