How are these aspects (special move input, kameos) compared to earlier MK games since MK9? MK9 also has the various 'tag' modes and chain combos, but maybe the implementation is different?

It's really quite uncomfortable to play using an arcade stick, since it makes heavy use of the block and kameo buttons as modifiers for moves and chains in combos. You really need to have a finger on both at all times. I spent a lot of time trying to come up with a workable layout, but I ended up just going back to the gamepad, which is what the game was clearly designed around using.

Compared to earlier games, I find it a lot harder to chain into special moves. Maybe the timing window is tighter... I'd have to go back and play X and 11 again to be sure. The timing doesn't match the animation, since it's more like the long chain combos of the older Tekken games, where you just have to hit each input one after another. A lot more characters also seem to have special moves where you tap back, down, attack, which feels very unnatural to pull off at the end of a combo.

Almost finished with Monkey Island II. The game is much shorter than I remember, but the humor still works 100%. That said, it has a lot of moon logic puzzles that I did not remember and found quite annoying. I still think the first game is far superior though. I will move on to the third game as soon as this is done.

Soulcalibur VI
I dunno what to think about this one. The story mode is a joke. The dialogue is awful, and enemies just sit there looking at you as you move around the arena. It feels broken. It sure does look good, though. The story mode also switches you from one character to another pretty frequently, which is probably the worst way to get you into a fighting game. I think it's kind of trashy so far.

Mortal Kombat 1
I kind of like this. I stopped struggling with the character-specific combo challenges, and now I like it. I still find the screen hard to parse, since everything is lit so "real," but it feels nice to play. I was surprised to find how easy the "tower" mode is to view the endings for each character; based on how grueling the tutorial and combo challenges are, I was expecting something like the brutal arcade versions of the older games.

One thing I really like about this game is how transparent it is. If you check the move list for a character, it will list properties like how many frames the move takes to pull off. This is crucial stuff, and it's cool that the game just tells you. It remove a lot of the trial and error, and the excellent tutorial, though sometimes frustrating, does a great job at explaining how to play the game.

Soul Calibur is still one of my most favorite games on the Dreamcast. I have the Dreamcast I bought when it came out and I still get on there every once in awhile to play this game. Super fun. I didn't even realize there were "sequels".

The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.

I really like that one (along with the first game in the series on the PSX, Soul Blade/Soul Edge), which is why I'm so disappointed with VI so far. The "story" modes of those two games were great, so I'm not happy with the lame mode you get in VI, where you basically just read a bunch of awful text in between easy battles. It feels very cheap.

Master Of Orion 2, I can still play it after 30 years, you cant say the same for modern games that rely on internet connections to activate or continuously need.

Bloodborne

Finished my second playthrough. The map quality drops slightly near the end of the main game (e.g. Nightmare Frontier and Unseen Village). It's still pretty decent though, just not as good as some of the earlier levels. And it does pick up during the DLC areas. Anyhow, soloing all the Bloodborne bosses wasn't overly difficult, with a few exceptions.

The Shadows of Yharnam were certainly tougher due to it being a 3 on 1 fight. But you can use the pillar in the middle of the arena to strategically split them up. Ebriettas was also noticeably harder without a summon to distract her. She has some really strong attacks that can deplete your health bar in seconds. Fortunately, most of these can be avoided by circle strafing and staying behind her as much as possible. Ludwig was definitively harder to solo, as I had no one to tank his barrage of hits during the first phase, so I had to spend a lot of healing flasks there. But as before, I found his second phase to be somewhat easier, and managed to beat him eventually.

Lastly, the Saw Cleaver pleasantly surprised me. That thing is remarkably good for a starting weapon. During my first playthrough, I had switched to Ludwig's Holy Blade about half way through, due to its better scaling and higher base damage. But the faster attack speed of the Saw Cleaver and its extra bonus vs. beasts kinda make up for the lower stats. This time around, I kept using it until the very end, and it never let me down. Even the mighty Orphan of Kos was cut down by this basic weapon. No wonder it's so prominently featured on the game's cover art.

All in all, I really enjoyed my second playthrough of this awesome game. So weird that Sony never commissioned a simple PS5 upgrade patch, allowing Bloodborne to run at 60 FPS, and possibly offering a resolution boost as well. Thanks to mods and emulation, even my lowly RTX 3060 can manage that much.

And done. I unlocked the first achievement exactly 2 months ago on May 25. I ended up doing to endings because on the first one I failed to kill the Kraken before the main antagonist died.

Over all I liked the gameplay, the visuals, character designs, what accompanied invoking/casting the skills. I didn't encounter too many bugs. There was one in the late game where the game stopped giving quest rewards and sometimes it crashed to the desktop upon reloading a save. I also liked the story and lore. The writing of the dialogs bothered me a bit. The characters often sounded like quippy Marvel characters. Did Larian do this in BG3 too?

Either way, 162 hours in 2 months. I haven't been this addicted to a game in years. And somehow I did it without anything else in my life suffering for it. Normally I'm probably wasting a lot of time without noticing.

I've been on a bit of a Biohazard kick lately. I really like a lot of the games in the series, though I must admit that I've never finished the first game (I really need to address that). I have completed Resident Evil 2 (PSX), Biohazard 4 (PS3), and Biohazard 5 (PS3). I lost interest in the series with Biohazard 5, which has some excellent combat but a really juvenile story that's bizarrely all about the power of friendship.

Biohazard 6
This is the game that killed the series for a while. I remember playing the demo on PS3 and absolutely hating it. It is such a PS3/360-era game... tons of sequences where you just walk slowly down a hall while listening to exposition, QTEs, objective markers even though levels are just corridors one after another. The framerate was also quite poor on the PS3, making the game uncomfortable to play.

The PC port is a massive improvement. It supports high refresh rates, and can be played at 60 fps (or "variable," which is 120 fps but breaks some parts). You can even disable the QTEs. Of course, it can't correct the PS3/360-era design of cinema scenes connected by runs down corridors (Capcom should be remaking this game, not masterpieces like Biohazard 2 or Biohazard 4), but you can now at least appreciate the awesome combat. Whenever you run into a group of zombies, the game goes from 4/10 to 10/10. This game is not a survival horror game; it's basically a 3D version of something like Final Fight. You're scanning the environment, dodging attacks, positioning yourself in the optimal locations, roundhouse kicking groups of zombies. It feels awesome.

Biohazard 7
I had this on PS4, but I always prefer to play a first-person game with a mouse, so I got it on Steam. I first played through the demo, which is a unique scenario taking place in a small portion of the map from the actual game.

As a fan of gritty and gory 70s/80s horror movies, I like it... but it feels more like something like Outlast than a Biohazard game. On the other hand, as a fan of horror movies, I was disappointed to see a sort of cargo-cult design mentality. It feels like something designed by people that don't really like horror movies, but just looked up modern horror cliches and put them all in the game. The game would also be very annoying to replay, thanks to all the cinemas you can't skip, s-l-o-w segments where you just walk and listen to exposition, etc. When will game developers finally realize that no on wants to just slowly walk down a hall/valley/cave listening to story?

Me and my friend played though RE 6 a while ago and we had a blast playing it in co op. Lots of action and fun moves like rolling around on the ground and fun melee attacks. we loved it.

Yeah, this is awesome. It's unbelievable how much mobility you have in this game.

---

I completed the first chapter of the Leon scenario, and grew increasingly fond of the game. The tutorial section is indeed awful, but once you get a couple of sections into the chapter, it's great. Yes, the maps are still mostly corridors between arena battles, but the battles are really good.

The best part, so far, is the final section of the chapter, where you're stuck in a gun shop with a few other survivors and battling against a seemingly endless supply of zombies. You'd think that it would be clunky and frustrating to deal with 5-6 zombies in such a small environment from a behind-the-shoulder perspective... but it just works. It feels like playing a beat'em up, like Final Fight or Bare Knuckle, because the positioning is so accurate and understandable. It's just incredible.

I just finished playing "Amulets & Armor" as a livestreamed playthrough and it was a absolutely amazing game.

Totally recommend this one, loads of fun and more interesting level design than Hexen.

I bought BeamNG Drive about 2 maybe 3 weeks ago and man have I been just sucked into that game. The new update that came out just yesterday has been a game changer for it. Before the update it ran pretty good on my Steam Deck and now it's a night and day difference in both performance and image quality on the Deck.

I started playing X-Wing. I loved this game as a kid in the 90s. From the moment I saw the ad in computer mags I wanted to play it. I don't remember how I managed to buy the game because in grade school I had no money, though I had a paper route so I probably managed it from that. I cant remember what computer I played it on , but I know that I wasnt all that good at the game and I never beat it.

Well I installed it on my 486 recently and after swapping sound cards around I got the digitized voices working perfectly and it looked and sounded amazing. I started off using the same control method I used in the 90s, which was a combo of gravis gamepad, Mouse and Keyboard.

So , the gravis pad was faster for maneuvering , but then id use the mouse for fine precision shooting and obviously the keyboard was for managing the systems. it was wierd but it worked.

I started using the same method this time around but man thats so wrong, so I installed my Microsoft Sidewinder 3D pro and man is it ever amazing to play this game using the flight stick and keyboard. This is how i should have played it back then but I didnt have the joystick. I played through all the A wing historic missions and will go through the Y wing and X wing ones next Then ev entually B wing . This really takes me back and its a blast to play and I hope I can actually finish the game this time around.

Just wanted to let y'all know that after nearly 30 years, I finally beat SiN last Sunday 😜 I'm probably one of the few peoplpe who chose it over Half Life and Blood 2 back in the day (all three came out like the same month if memory serves me well) but I stopped playing due to some game-breaking glitch.. which sounds stupidly easy to fix today, but I was just a broke kid with no internet access back in the late 90s and didn't even know games had patches for something other than 3D accelerator support 😜 . Anyway, still a fun game, I loved the 3D sound, but the wobbly 3D models kinda sorta reminded me of how AI handles upscaling of very low-res video content, which in itself is a ticket to Uncanny Valley 😖 Maybe some day I'll try Half Life and Blood 2, never really played'em 😐
