Pretty sure that was our only CD for a while. Got rid of most of my CDs a few years ago, not even sure what I kept now apart from the Metal Gear Solid and Silent Hill soundtracks (not because I like them or even played them, but because it surprised me they even existed).

My first one was Queen - Live Magic

The first CD I heard was when my dad bought "Billy Joel - Storm Front" in 1989. The first CD I "bought" was "Silverchair - Neon Ballroom" in 1999 by uh.. ripping off the beenz internet currency and a poorly secured gambling website

Pretty sure mine was R.E.M - Out of Time, in 1992 - this would have been on one of the very early single-speed Mitsumi drives I had installed in a 386 SX-40.

I had a CDROM drive before we had a CD-playing stereo in the house.

It was probably a Sega Saturn game, since most of those have redbook audio unlike PC CD-ROMs.

First CD to own was won it in a raffle competition.

The basic specs were:
486dx33
4mb ram
SVGA video card
Sound blaster 16 compatible sound card
CDROM drive 2x
14.4 dial up phone modem
Floppy drives
NO USB
DOS 5.0, Windows 3.1

The CDROM drive was a technological revolution.
Prior to this peoples we’re using vinyl records , 8-track tapes, cassette tapes.
Reel to reel tape recorders.

You forgot to mention that music CD's were first released back in 1982.

I actually never bought or had any music CD's 😉

I used cassettes and then went straight to MP3s in 1996 and never looked back since 😀

I have about 450 legit real CDs, only stopped buying them when the retailers closed their stores and went online - I don't buy online.

Everything is listed in a database, so the first CD I bought was "Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells" on 1986-10-11. It still plays perfectly well.

What a great compilation, I still have my copy.

I think my first CD was In Through the Out Door by Led Zeppelin. Not the Zeppelin album I wanted but it's all they had, and this was pre-drivers license so getting all the way to the shopping center was an effort, so I just bought it.

It's considered one of their worst albums - Jimmy Page was mostly absent due to his heroin addiction - but I quite like it.

The next couple of purchases were a Jimi Hendrix best-of and Tubular Bells by Mike Oldfield 😅

I think the very oldest CD I have is Dexys Midnight Runners / Too-Rye-Ay which has a date of 1982.

Pink Floyd Dark Side Of The Moon 20th Anniversary Edition was my first ever new CD purchase and I still have it.

The quality of sound from CD was amazing to me being used to records and tapes.
I got it in 1995.
The sound system I had was a woodgrain Sanyo DC620 IC-FET system from 1974 with record player, FM Stereo and 2 x 25 watt speakers (could use 4) quite old back then sometimes seen still but CD brought it to a new level of clarity!
I had a multimedia computer with the early multimedia specs I remember quad CD-ROM and windows 95 1st edition I was disappointed I couldn't copy CD's to it and the speakers were tinny sounding so I patched a cable and jacked the CD-ROM to the stereo with it's headphone jack.
Unfortunately I parted company with that stereo in 1999 when the ex said it had to go that it was ugly 🙁
I vowed never again to make such sacrifices for love.
But thinking back CD's were bigger in capacity than hard disks so couldn't fit a whole CD anyhow until mp3 came along and I was on Pentiums by then.
I found a hacked CD-ROM driver that replaced the windows version in windows 95 to Millennium (released before Me) so could directly rip audio from CD's into .wav format without transcoding ideal for early 486 to pentium PC's that struggled to rip mp3's without problems but still chaotic on pre y2k hard disk real estate found in homes.
Vogons has archived this driver if anyone's interested in it.

Be careful connecting old hi-fi systems to computers. There are sometimes strange power/earthing issues that will zap your sound card and/or motherboard. Make sure everything is powered off (and ideally unplugged from the wall) before you make and break the connection.

(Headphone jacks are especially dangerous in this regard, especially the fat quarter-inch ones, because the live contacts make connection before the ground contacts.)

I recieved it as a Christmas present along with a Goodmans GCD 40 personal CD player.
It was some months later with this.

Blizzard of Ozz in about 1982, still have it.

Probably a couple of years off, Blizzard of Ozz came out on CD in '85 for EU and '86 for USA
