1st of all - THERE never is a continuation of the driver install after it requests a reboot.
This is getting exhausting, at this point I might give up on running 9x on anything that is not BX440 chipset (Asrock 776i65G).

Unfortunately, the newer the motherboard, the more issues it's likely to have under Win9x. I had a similar problem on an LGA775 board with the P35 chipset, where literally every single IRQ on the system was taken. Turns out that motherboard had 12 USB ports in total (counting the internal headers too) and they were all enabled by default in the BIOS, which took up a bunch of IRQs. Only after lowering the number of active USB ports to 6 was I able to install any other hardware under Win9x. And that's just one example of integrated devices hogging resources. On-board SATA/RAID controllers, network cards and audio solutions can sometimes cause problems under Win9x as well.

As you say, the safest bet is to use a motherboard based on the 440BX chipset with no integrated devices. Anything newer is potentially problematic. Depending on the BIOS options, it may be possible to resolve some of the resource conflicts on later motherboards, but that can take a lot of effort, and might still not work reliably in the end.

Do you have previous posts or a thread where troubleshooting has been done? If not can you supply some additional information like does the card work in another system? What does it show up as in device manager? Have you cleaned the card contacts and slot even if they appear clean already?

Also, if you haven't already, try Joseph's guide using an absolutely pure Windows 98SE install: No quick install, no custom ISOs with integrated drivers, no service packs. Just a clean 98SE disc and your chipset drivers.

I mention this because I have the somewhat similar Asrock P4i65G (Socket 478 version of your board) which I found misbehaves in a similar way if you use any of the above.

As mentioned in the other thread, I made these guides six years ago, and I don't use my SBLive/Audigy cards for DOS gaming anymore. Therefore, I wanted to let people know that both guides are no longer being maintained or updated. I will leave the info up for reference purposes, but I don't want to give others a false impression that I'm still working on this. I've edited the initial posts in both threads to make that clear.

I am aware that this is an "outdated" thread so no support from initial Joseph expected here but I still hope for some experience from others 😀
I have an SB Live! CT4670 in my Win 98 "modern/retro" PC. It's running P4 2.8 GHz on P4P800-VM/S motherboard.
I tried both 3.0 drivers and the Joseph's Audigy 2.1 drivers from Phil's website: https://www.philscomputerlab.com/sound-blaster-live.html

SB Live! in Windows works right away, no issues whatsoever. It just works, nothing to add.

The partial problem comes from DOS games.
I had to make some fiddling around, especially with IRQ reservations to get SB16 to get it onP220 I5 D1 H5. Otherwise it was using P240 or P260 and IRQ 7. At the moment SB16 emu driver loads correctly and initiates on P220 I5 D1 H5 values.
I run games from Win98 directly and when I configure Doom or Duke3d to use those values, all sounds good (at least enough for me with this card) and I get both MIDI and FM effects. But for some other DOS titles, especially older ones e.g. Flashback, Electro Man, Supaplex, Cannon Fodder (to name a few) I only get a MIDI sound but no FM sound at all.
I checked config.sys and it seems to have all of the correct data included as well as ctsyn.ini.
Running SET command also shows correct values for BLASTER=. Still, dead silence for those games.
Is there anything obvious that I am missing here, something that I should check, something in BIOS that could lead to that?

Even if this guide is no longer maintained I think this is still the best place to ask this. I assume these are the latest drivers for the SB Live? That is the reason I'd like to use them because this guide makes easy to find and install only what is necessary.

But one problem I noticed this weekend was that the I2S input on CT4620 is not available on the mixer (I think this is the only model with I2S input on the card). When installing older drivers from Liveware 3.0 CD the input is available on the mixer.

But what I really would like to get working is the Line-IN2 or AUX2 I2S input from AUD_EXT header. That is the one where you connect LiveDrive panel. With LiveDrive2 installed, the Line-IN2 and AUX2 etc appears on the mixer (but still not the I2S that is on CT4620).

I found out that connecting AUD_EXT pin 10 (GPO1) to pin 23 (GPI0) fakes LiveDrive to be available on the older Liveware 3.0 drivers, at least enough that Line-IN2 appears and works. AUX2 didn't seems to appear but I only need one working I2S input that would be available on AUD_EXT (so other models than CT4620 could be used for I2S input). Looks like Creative changed the LiveDrive detection method for these later drivers to something less simple.

So does anyone know how to properly fake LiveDrive to be installed or any other trick to get these later drivers to work. I believe this is just a software lock so maybe there is a way to force the input to be used without any hardware tricks.
