Please can you tell me if a Creative SoundBlaster Pro 2 card is a worthwhile purchase or not. (It's not cheap).

It's good, only drawback is that it lacks a midi daughterboard header.
You'll get max SB compatability with this card, the Sound Blaster 16 for example doesn't do stereo when you use it with Sb pro mode in games

Yup, thumps up to the 'ol SBPro2. I ran one of those for years. It's about as compatible as you can get with everything. The onboard amp kinda stinks though cuz it adds noise. But even "line level"-equipped SB16s are noisy as hell so who can tell? heh

Agreed, a SB Pro is nice to have, although I wouldn't pay very much for it. The CT1600 model is rather common, it shouldn't be expensive.
