Is there a setup where music doesn't lag in space in Wing Commander: Privateer?

I thought that it was a CPU issue, but I just tried this on a fast Pentium D 950 (3.4Ghz) with an AWE64 Gold and a MK1869 with Adlib music and it still lags. If I press "P" to pause the game, the music plays normal. But when I unpause, the music lags. It's even worse when I use MIDI music.

Is this the whole game lagging or just the music? Does the music lag the same on a period correct 386?
