As far as I know, the interenal sample rate conversion method (linear interpolation using a weighted average between samples) is copied pretty much exactly from the GF1 chip, the differences you will be picking up is mostly the better DACs and anti-aliasing filters used on modern sound cards where the emulated output is converted to analog audio. It can be percieved as "harsh" compared to original cards due to stronger retention of high frequencies. The analog conversion and filtering happens outside of the GF1 chip itself (and consequently outside of GF1 emulation), internally the GF1 seems to have no filtering and operates on the raw samples from input to output.
It would be good to provide some samples of the significant differences you have observed

I can provide these.
What GUS cards do you own btw?

Only a PicoGUS, the differences I described are differences that affect many types of emulation and not just the GUS so I am speaking in generalities. Nevertheless it is an interesting but niche topic and since the chances of getting replies was low I thought to comment.
