Hello everyone.
I've always been somewhat fascinated by some of the more obscure CPU lines that quickly faded away such as the 6x86 from Cyrix and the K5 from AMD. I've had my fair bit of experience with both and enjoy building systems based on them and trying to push them as far as possible, seeing what's playable when it comes to games and what's not, that sort of thing.
I've long since read that 6x86 should be paired with some of the VIA or even SiS offerings from that era such as VP2 or VPX or the 5571 chipsets, as those handle the processors better, whatever that may mean exactly and I've heard the same apply for the K5. The general sentiment is that Intel's chipsets, while by far the most stable and usually performant on stock settings, are not trying to show off processors from other manufacturers in the best of light. I've heard terms such as Write Allocate and Linear Burst mentioned here and there but never anything too concrete.
How much truth is there to such statements? Does it only apply for DOS systems or does Win95/9x suffer from the same performance drop? And if the performance difference is there, what kind of difference are we talking about? Are utilities able to bridge this gap?
Unfortunately, nowadays it is getting all the more difficult to find relevant information on the subject.
To summarize, has anyone done any testing to compare the performance of a 6x86 or 6x86MX/MII on say a VIA VPX vs Intel 430VX/HX/TX chipsets? Thanks in advance for any help.
