I'm a long time user of the great DBGL DOSBox Game Launcher by Ronald Blankendaal (https://dbgl.org). My contribution to his project in the last few years was providing the updated german translations. Since Ronald - after 20 years - unfortunately decided to pause or stop the development of this great piece of software, but has kindly provided the source code of the latest "official" DBGL v0.100 beta 17, I have decided to update it with some new features and compatibility upgrades for current DOSBox versions, with the help of AI.

***DBGL - Extended Edition*** is an unofficial continuation of Ronald's DBGL 0.100 beta 17. Ronald is - for now - not involved in the DBGL Extended Edition; the foundation and almost everything in it is his work: about 80 % of the program code is unchanged from his 0.100 beta 17.

Be aware that it is still in alpha state, so you might encounter bugs which I would be happy to fix if you post me a detailed bug report in this topic (see next post).

INSTALLING AND COPYING
1. If you don't already use it, download the original DBGL v0.100 beta 17 first, because it is a requirement for running DBGL - Extended Edition. You can find the download link for DBGL v0.100 beta 17 (dbgl0100beta17.zip) in this post: Re: DOSBox Game Launcher (DOSBox Frontend)
2. BACKUP your whole DBGL folder first.
3. Download the most up-to-date version of DBGL - Extended Edition from https://github.com/mrmercy82/dbgl-extended-edition/releases
4. Unzip dbgl-0.101alphaXXX-update.zip over your DBGL folder and replace existing files. It only contains dbgl.jar, language files and changelogs.
5. Start DBGL with double-click on dbgl.jar. The database is upgraded automatically; profiles and settings are kept.
6. Optional: In menu "DOSBox" → “Download DOSBox…” for Staging or DOSBox-X, then switch your profiles.

The Extended Edition is tested mainly on Linux, with real configurations of Staging 0.82/0.83, DOSBox-X 2025/2026, ECE and Daum. Feedback from Windows and macOS is welcome.

The complete list of changes is in CHANGELOG-en.txt.

Who should switch?
• You use DOSBox Staging 0.83 or newer, or a recent DOSBox-X and want every setting in the profile dialog instead of text files.
• You have many profiles and want to find problems, compare, change several at once and undo changes.
• You play PC-98 games or use paths with spaces that did not work in 0.100 beta 17.
Your profiles, database and settings are kept when updating. On first start the database gets one extra column for play time.

MAJOR NEW FEATURES (future updates will support most current versions of the most common DOSBox releases)
1. Full support for DOSBox Staging 0.83. Renamed settings (e.g. glshader → shader, windowresolution → window_size) and on/off switches are converted automatically when switching. Every 0.83 setting has its own field, including CRT colour profile, deinterlacing, dedithering, image adjustments, Sound Canvas, denoiser and drive noises.
2. DOSBox-X up to 2026.10.01. About 100 common settings have real fields in “Additional options” groups (VESA modes, EMS/UMB, VCPI, Fluidsynth reverb and chorus, ISA/PCI bus clock and more). The configuration is now generated completely; in 0.100 beta 17 about half of the settings were missing.
3. Every setting of every DOSBox version is reachable. Settings without a field of their own sit on the page they belong to, in a collapsible “Further settings” group: with description, a list of the documented values, bold for changed values and a reset button. New pages appear only when the version has matching settings (e.g. Mainboard and BIOS, PC-98, VESA / SVGA, Windows Sound System).
4. The profile dialog adapts to the DOSBox version. Option lists come from the configuration the installed DOSBox writes itself. Pages without matching settings disappear, unsupported fields can be hidden. The search box finds descriptions, tooltips and values too.
5. Download DOSBox directly. DBGL checks daily for new versions of Staging and DOSBox-X and can download them from GitHub, unpack them, add them as a DOSBox version and switch profiles over (Windows and Linux).
6. An automatic update notification for updates of DBGL - Extended Edition can be activated in the general settings
7. PC-98: hard disk images (.HDI, .NHD) and floppies (.FDI, .D88) can be browsed, started and booted, e.g. Windows 95 for PC-98 in DOSBox-X.
8. more to come...

MORE NEW FEATURES
Keeping profiles in shape
• Check profiles: finds invalid values and missing folders or files, removes invalid values and repairs moved paths for all profiles at once (e.g. a new drive letter).
• Warning sign in the profile list: marks profiles with problems. The tooltip shows the problem, a click jumps to the setting. A “With problems” tab shows only those profiles.
• Earlier versions: the last five configurations of every profile are kept and can be viewed with their differences and restored.
• Compare profiles: two profiles side by side, all effective differences.
• Statistics: total play time, most played, recently played and never started games.
Many profiles at once
• Presets: Windows 95/98, Windows 3.1, slow XT/286 games, fast games and demos, Tandy, PC-98, plus your own. Only settings the DOSBox version knows are set. Usable in the profile dialog or on all selected profiles.
• Switch to another DOSBox version: for one, several or all profiles, with preview and report. Only your own changes are kept, the rest comes from the new version.
• Edit several profiles including the further settings; differing values are marked red.
• Undo last bulk change: restores configuration and DOSBox version of all profiles concerned.
Safety and comfort
• Create and restore backups (database, profiles, templates, settings as a zip), optionally automatic daily or weekly.
• Status window: shows DOSBox output (also for Staging 0.83 and DOSBox-X on Windows), highlights errors and warnings, can be copied and saved. Messages about a setting are clickable and open the profile at that setting. If DOSBox ends right after starting, the window stays open with the messages.
• Take over a dosbox.conf: drop a configuration file on a profile to take over its settings after a preview.

SMALLER IMPROVEMENTS
• Play time: DBGL counts how long each game runs; new sortable “Play time” column.
• Translations: German is complete, and about 7,000 texts that were still English are translated in the 17 other languages.
• Profile context menu: open profiles folder, check profile, fix problems, earlier version, take over settings from a dosbox.conf.
• “Differences from defaults…” lists every setting of a profile that differs from the DOSBox default.
• Before starting, DBGL checks mounted folders and images and, optionally, invalid values.
• Version check at startup: if a DOSBox entry does not match the executable, DBGL offers to fix it and to rewrite the configuration if needed (the old file is kept as .bak).
• Newer DOSBox versions DBGL does not know yet are mapped to the nearest known generation.
• Shader lists for Staging and DOSBox-X include shaders you installed yourself.
• New “Sound Blaster 2” page for DOSBox-X.
• Status window remembers position and size and folds many identical lines into one.
• Failed boot: the DOSBox message stays visible instead of DOSBox closing at once.

BUG FIXES (compared to 0.100 beta 17)
• DOSBox-X 2024.10.01 and later: the configuration was generated without “-all” and held only about half of the settings.
• Paths with spaces (e.g. “M & M\M&M 3\MM 3.EXE”) work. DBGL cut the file name at the space; it now writes the 8.3 short names exactly as DOSBox does. Old profiles are repaired on first start.
• Empty entries such as “locale_period=” or “file_locking=”, which overrode DOSBox defaults, are no longer saved.
• Boot lines with a Windows path (boot "C:...\win95.hdi") were misread and created a broken “imgmount A” mount.
• Reader for older DOSBox configurations fixed (58 instead of 23 value lists recognised for Staging 0.82.2).

How to report bugs:

To understand and fix issues you encounter while using DBGL - Extended Edition, I need detailed information like this:

What OS are you using?
What DBGL version are you using and what version were you using before updating?
What DOSBox version(s) were your profiles associated with before updating?
What are the locations/paths to DBGL and your game folders?
What steps are necessary to reproduce the bug? This is important - please try to post a detailed report of what you did and what happened.

Feel free to post any issues in this topic. Thank you.

Ok tried Alpha 40... Restored my entire backup of my dbgl folder, still did not hold any mount points, all my profiles literally have no mounting information or executables selected anymore. If I edit one, it tells me its incomplete and on the Mounting tab, everything that was previously set up was gone. I have a handful that did happen to retain their CD Rom D: drive mounting points, but everything else is like the rest, C: drives and all the game executables are gone and need to be re-entered.

MacOS 27
DBGL Beta 17 as it should be.
DOSBox-X 2026.10.01
The paths are on a separate drive, my entire "C:" drive is used for the whole lot and lives in a folder on a separate drive.
No steps necessary. Update the jar file to DBGL Extended and open it on first run, everything is gone before the pop up even shows up to ask if I want to update the listings for the DOSBox versions I'm using.

Thanks for the report, I'm now pretty sure the issue might be connected to MacOS since I can't reproduce it on Windows. Kindly send me one "before" .conf file and the same .conf file after it's mounting data got wiped out in DBGL. This will help alot to find out what has really happened.

I might have finally solved – and sorry for the trouble.

First important question about the order:
Did you restore your backup first and was everything still fine right after restoring when you ran it with v0.100 Beta 17 before you updated to v0.101 alpha 40?
Or did you restore your backup, then updated to v0.101 alpha 40 and then started DBGL Extended?

Quick test to find out:
1. Copy/backup your dosbox-x.conf and the dosbox-x.conf.bak next to it (if there is one). If your DOSBox-X folder is outside the DBGL folder, your backup doesn't cover them.
2. Restore your DBGL backup once more.
3. Start your old DBGL beta 17, without updating.
4. Do the profiles show their C: drive and executables?

If they are missing in beta 17 too:
- The damage is in DOSBox-X's own dosbox-x.conf, not in your profiles.
- I think your "mount C ..." line is in the [autoexec] of dosbox-x.conf. The profiles then only contain "C:", "cd \GAME", "GAME.EXE". That's why your D: CD mounts survived – they are in the profiles.
- On first start, DBGL Extended offered to rewrite that file. Up to alpha 40 this replaced the whole file, mount line included.
- To fix: edit your DOSBox-X entry in DBGL to see the config file path. Next to it is dosbox-x.conf.bak. Copy its [autoexec] lines back into dosbox-x.conf (or rename the .bak back).
- Alpha 41 fixes this: [autoexec] and your own values are kept when the file is rewritten.

If beta 17 shows everything fine:
- Please start DBGL Extended from Terminal: cd into your DBGL folder, then java -jar dbgl.jar
- Please send me what it prints.
- And how do you normally start DBGL – the app, the start script, or double-clicking dbgl.jar?

If none of this fits, please send one profile .conf from your backup (DBGL folder -> profiles) and your dosbox-x.conf.

**DBGL Extended Edition 0.101 alpha 42** released.

Download at:
http://github.com/mrmercy82/dbgl-extended-edition/releases

This one should fix the bugs reported by Monotremata and Neville. There are more fixes and features. See the update list below.

INSTALLING/UPDATING: (see details...)

Details

Updating an existing Installation of DBGL - Extended Edition:
1. BACKUP your whole DBGL and DOSBox folders first.
2. Download the most up-to-date version of DBGL - Extended Edition from https://github.com/mrmercy82/dbgl-extended-edition/releases
3. Unzip dbgl-0.101alphaXXX-update.zip over your DBGL folder and replace existing files. It only contains dbgl.jar, language files and changelogs.
4. Start DBGL with double-click on dbgl.jar. The database is upgraded automatically; profiles and settings are kept.

Fresh installation of DBGL - Extended Edition:
2. BACKUP your whole DBGL and DOSBox folders first.
The database is upgraded automatically; profiles and settings are kept.[

### Changes in this version (2026-11-07)

**Fixed**
- Editing several profiles stopped with an error on OK since alpha 19, and nothing was saved. It works again.
- CD images: DBGL writes "mount"/"imgmount" to suit the DOSBox version (DOSBox-X stopped with "PHYSFS couldn't mount", e.g. after switching from
Staging; Staging 0.83 gets "mount").
- MobyGames: no more endless loop; the search runs in the background with Cancel and clear error messages (for all sources).
- Editing several profiles: switching on only the online lookup now runs it.
- Lists of values from DOSBox configurations in other languages (e.g. a German Staging file) are recognised.
- Warning "not found" no longer for RAN2.EXE when there is RAN2.BAT.
- The view icon always showed "small tiles" after start.

**New**
- MobyGames through its official API (free key in the settings), since MobyGames blocks its web pages for programs.
- New sources for game information: IGDB and SteamGridDB.
- "Replace values..." for all selected profiles, with preview and lists of the possible values.
- "Find manuals and extras...": finds manuals, walkthroughs, maps, reference cards, copy protection and soundtracks in the game folder and adds them as
links; optionally when a profile is added.
- Optionally all DOSBox settings in the profile (like D-Fend Reloaded), per profile or for new profiles; the drawbacks are shown right next to it.
- View: buttons List / Tiles / Boxes and a "View" menu (Ctrl+1 to 7).
- Shaders: presets of Staging 0.83, "Refresh" and "Try".
- Several CDs: DBGL offers to add CD2, CD3 ... as well; hint on changing CDs (Ctrl+F4, DOSBox-X host key+D).
- Links in the profile can be freed with "Remove".
- Icons for the links in the context menu "View".

MORE (see details...)

Details

**Improved**
- Faster: warning signs at start up to 4 times as fast, tile and box views redraw far less often.
- Undoing a change of several profiles shows a log of what changes first.
- Empty logs in wizards now say "Done – no problems".
- New windows open at a usable size.
- Small things: window title with version, About window, button order in "Switch profile", OK button bottom right, startup question without line breaks.

DBGL Extended Edition 0.101 alpha 44

An unofficial continuation of DBGL 0.100 beta 17 by Ronald Blankendaal (who is not involved in this edition – the foundation and nearly three quarters of the code are still his work).

Installation
Download from the releases page: https://github.com/mrmercy82/dbgl-extended-edition/releases

Unzip dbgl-0.101alpha44-update.zip over an existing DBGL 0.100 beta 17 or an earlier 0.101 alpha Extended Edition, replacing existing files. Profiles, database and settings are kept.

No DBGL yet? Download and install DBGL 0.100 beta 17 first (announcement and download on Vogons), then unzip the update over it.

Please back up your DBGL folder and your DOSBox folders first – this is an alpha. The database is upgraded to 0.102 (a new table for play sessions; older versions ignore it).

New in alpha 44

  • Import GOG and Steam DOS games from their own DOSBox configurations, with a DOSBox-X recommendation where needed (CD on the IDE bus, hard disk booters, PC-98 images)
  • Find and merge duplicate profiles
  • Much extended statistics: play sessions, longest sessions, play time by year and month, counts by DOSBox version, genre, developer and year of release – can be saved as a report
  • New toolbar: filters, online info, check profiles, random game, statistics, settings
  • Optional DOSBox output log per profile
  • Warning when a PC-98 image (.hdi etc.) is used without DOSBox-X
  • Progress bars instead of short hangs (tiles/boxes, switching and saving profiles, images from online sources)
  • DOSBox Staging 0.83: all image mounts as MOUNT, including hard disk booters
Rest of the changelog

Fixed

  • GOG/Steam configurations: "imgmount d: ..." (with a colon) dropped the CD drive; "cycles=max 105%" became an invalid value when switching to Staging
  • Booting a numbered hard disk image (imgmount 2 ...) with "boot -l C" instead of mounting the file a second time without -size
  • Windows with only an OK: the button has its normal width again
  • "DISPLAY: Unknown video mode" (Staging at the start) no longer counts as a warning

New

  • Broken links (manuals, extras) and missing shaders are reported in "Check profiles"; "Find missing folders" also relocates links
  • Statistics window: "Clean up removed profiles..." removes play sessions and log entries left over from deleted profiles
  • ScreenScraper prepared as a source (appears once DBGL has a developer access)

Improved

  • Windows open in the middle of the main window, the DOSBox status window at the top left; windows you moved yourself open there again
  • Images from online sources: a progress bar, and the reason when images cannot be loaded (e.g. HTTP 403 / Cloudflare at MobyGames, which also affects the Metropolis database)
  • MobyGames is no longer the default source (now TheGamesDB) and is listed last; the hint says that its API key is paid
  • Settings: "Automatic updates" at the top; Profiles and Help menus reordered; About window more compact
  • Find manuals and extras: the kind drop-down follows the mouse, and a column shows used and free link fields
  • Tests with saved answers of MobyGames and IGDB; GitHub builds and tests on Linux and Windows

Full changelog: CHANGELOG-en.txt in the download. Feedback and bug reports are very welcome, especially from Windows and macOS users.

DBGL Extended Edition 0.101 alpha 45

An unofficial continuation of DBGL 0.100 beta 17 by Ronald Blankendaal (who is not involved in this edition – the foundation and nearly three quarters of the code are still his work).

Installation
Download from the releases page: https://github.com/mrmercy82/dbgl-extended-edition/releases

Unzip dbgl-0.101alpha45-update.zip over an existing DBGL 0.100 beta 17 or an earlier 0.101 alpha Extended Edition, replacing existing files. Profiles, database and settings are kept.

No DBGL yet? Download and install DBGL 0.100 beta 17 first (announcement and download on Vogons), then unzip the update over it.

Please back up your DBGL folder and your DOSBox folders first – this is an alpha. The database is upgraded to 0.103 (links can hold up to 2048 characters); DBGL 0.100 beta 17 can still open it.

New in alpha 45

  • "Get covers for profiles without images..." (Profiles menu and right click): covers for many profiles at once, from all online sources, with a preview to tick.
  • One-click update of the Extended Edition: download, SHA-256 check, automatic backup, restart (usable from alpha 46 on).
  • "Check profiles" recommends DOSBox-X where needed (CD on the IDE bus, PC-98, hard disk booters) and switches with one button.
  • Statistics also as HTML with bar charts or as a CSV table.
  • Play time, sessions and the last session below the notes and in the profile editor.
  • Random game with a choice at the arrow: all, never started, favorites, more or less played half.
  • ScreenScraper is enabled as a source.
Rest of the changelog

Fixed

  • Links over 256 characters (e.g. archive.org, cloud drives) and pasted overlong titles made saving fail. Links now hold 2048 characters, the other fields accept only as much as the database keeps.
  • Play time: negative or huge values (clock changed) are no longer counted, a session counts at most 30 days; merging duplicates lost play time.
  • Profiles like "CON" or "AUX.txt": on Windows the log folder could not be created. Very long image descriptions gave file names that were too long.
  • Pouët: with a single hit on several platforms, all entries had the last platform.
  • The window symbol of the changelog was missing on Windows.

New

  • Right click, View: "Last DOSBox log".
  • Help menu: "Visit the Vogons forum".

Improved

  • Every window has the symbol of its menu item; Settings with the gear.
  • About: Ronald Blankendaal and the Extended Edition on lines of their own, database version above OK.
  • Settings, Online information archives: an info text with a link for every source.
  • The Filter and About symbols sit as low as the others.
  • "Check profiles": all buttons in one row.
  • Tests: Pouët with saved pages; the online test reports network errors instead of passing them.

Full changelog: CHANGELOG-en.txt in the download. Feedback and bug reports are very welcome, especially from Windows and macOS users.
