Does anyone know of a web resource or other that shows what high-end PC rigs were over time? E.g., what was considered a very-fast PC in 1996? CPU, RAM, HD, etc.

Just look at when Intel and AMD released their CPU's.
For sound cards and other things, wikipedia is actually quite useful.

excellent site, thanks! Checking CPUs by year is pretty easy. Not so much RAM quantities and Hard drive specs. I'm sure it's out there somewhere on the web.
Look up a site called the Red Hill Guide. It's a chronological recollection of the computer industry since like the late '80s from the perspective of an Australian computer vendor. Quite accurate, detailed and very interesting. I believe it is exactly what you're looking for.
both sites mentioned above are pure gold IMHO

This is a great site with just the type of info I was looking for. Thanks
Somewhere a month or so back there was a link given for scans of an old computer gaming magazine.
Oh yeah. I think you're talking about the mag scans in my sig.
