Game crashes after a short while and only in the build menu with the rotating building graphics. At first I thought I could fix it doing a full install (as all those files would be on the drive then and it may not need to talk with the CDROM) but once I did that it says there isn't enough space (needs 16meg) I could not find how to increase the mounted drives size.)

So, I uninstalled, reinstalled, and then followed the directions listed here: viewtopic.p...ght=dos32a

I get a:

DOS/16M error: [40] not enough available extended memory (XMIN)

ERROR: Program requires a video card with a VESA BIOS.

Any suggestions?

System info:

AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3500+
Core Speed 2193.6 MHz (11.0 x 199.4 MHz)
1GB DDR Dual channel
GeForce 7300 GS 512MB DDR
Onboard sound (Don't care much about the games sound, that works just fine using SB16 with defaults.)
WIN XP SP3 (Build 2600)

DOSBox allocates (by default) 100 MB on the emulated hard-drive. More info in the README.

Did you read my 60 Seconds Guide to DOSBox?

If that doesn't help, come back with details on how you mounted your C and D drives, how you did the install, how you configured sound, music etc.

Reading the aptly named README file will be a good idea too.

Read both the Wiki and your post.

mount C C:\FRAGILE
mount D H:\ -t cdrom

is the exact way that I did it, C:\FRAGILE is the install folder. I'm also running 'Tie Fighter' off a different directory without a hitch.

Used auto-detect while running in the DOSBox environment, it will not detect or use any sound outside DOSBox
"Sound Blaster 16" port 220 IRQ 7 DMA 5
same for music

The issue as far as I could tell wasn't how it was mounting, both drives mounted perfectly. The CD read (a genuine CD at that) and only in the building menu did the game crash. I've installed it within DOSBox and outside with the same result. I re-did it at 100MB (instead of 130MB for full) inside DOSBox and the same issue occurred. I'm on my 4th reinstall. (2x 30MB, 1x 130MB and 1x 100MB [current.])

The game exits to the DOSBox prompt with some error message:
- read the error message closely and try to locate the error
- try the hints at the above sections

Nothing above looked like it would solve the issue at all, the game ran smoothly, just crashes on the one screen, CPU Usage isn't high at any time of usage. Also, unable to reproduce the error for when it runs because of DVD/CD Drive issue (see below)

 - mount differently as some games are picky about the locations,
for example if you used "mount d d:\oldgames\game" try
"mount c d:\oldgames\game" and "mount c d:\oldgames"

Mounted it 2 different ways, the directory itself through the oldgames directory.

 - if the game requires a CD-ROM be sure you used "-t cdrom" when mounting and try different additional parameters (the ioctl, usecd and label switches, see the appropriate section)

CD Mount was alright, drive died half an hour ago though (see below.)

 - check the file permissions of the game files (remove read-only
attributes, add write permissions etc.)
- try reinstalling the game within DOSBox

Nothing setup like that for the file
Done twice now as stated above.

On a possibly related note my DVD/CD drive just died and was further mutilated when it refused my gentle attempts at getting my CD back, so I need to run out in less than an hour when Staples opens and get a new one.

C:\FRAGILE is the install folder.

How did the mounting look like exactly when you installed the game?

C:\ (C:\oldgames\INTRPLAY\FRAGILE
C:\ (C:\FRAGILE)
C:\ (C:\INTRPLAY\FRAGILE)

Please post the mounting-lines exactly as they stood when doing the installation,
like "it was mount c c:\xyz and mount d k:\ -t cdrom".

mount C C:\INTRPLAY\FRAGILE

then

mount D H:\ -t cdrom

then installed.

You said that you're using

mount C C:\FRAGILE
mount D H:\ -t cdrom

when playing, which does not make any sense then. Use the same mounting
as you used for the installation.

I created the directories, then mounted them then the DVD/CD Drive and installed through DOSBox, it makes sense.

I see where it got mixed up.

mount C C:\INTRPLAY\FRAGILE […]

mount C C:\INTRPLAY\FRAGILE

then

mount D H:\ -t cdrom

then installed.

is the current install. And the directories were made first, then installed through DOSBox after the DVD/CD Drive was mounted.

mount C C:\FRAGILE
mount D H:\ -t cdrom

Ignore that, it was one of the 3 previous installs

How do you start the game exactly?

Z:\>C:
C:\>fragile.exe

That's the exact thing I type to start the game unless it is right after installation where it's already in the drive holding the game files.

Well the game surely installs into a subdirectory, so either you didn't post
the correct mountings, you used different mountings for installation than
for gameplay, or whatever.
Any way start from scratch, reinstall the game EXACTLY following MiniMax's
guide and if there are still problems post the required information again for
this new rundown.

The subdirectory is the mounted drive directory

Normal (Via windows)
C:\INTRPLAY\FRAGILE

Mounted (VIA DOSBox)
C:\

I fail to see how there is still a misunderstanding on the sumdirectories. I am mounting the subdirectory that the game itself is in as the mounted drive, there are subdirectories in the mounted drive.

Here's a visual to prevent further mixup

If you had the "mount c C:\INTRPLAY\FRAGILE" during the installation,
there should be a C:\INTRPLAY\FRAGILE\FRAGILE after the installation
as the game unlikely installs into the root.

It does when you set it to just install to C:\

So either you didn't follow the guide, or you're lying to me. I dislike both options.

I gave you an image of EXACTLY how it is all setup and installed from DOSBox. To amuse you I'll uninstall and reinstall a fifth time.

which is NOT what you did.

Thanks, but skip it, i'm already amused enough by this.

I am not amused, but I am surely confused.
