When I play QUAKE in DOSBox, the CD audio tracks play, but I get no sound effects whatsoever. Can't even hear my gun go off; nothing. Is there anything I can do to fix this?

I may have some info as to why gus mode causes sound to fail in quake. This is from the readme for the 1.01 to 1.06 patch:
