Are you using the latest DOSBox 0.72? I used to have problems with the CD install in older versions (although I don't have the original 1994 CD, but the budget re-release 1996 CD)

The installer create a bat file at the end of the install, make sure that DOSBox runs in administrator mode in Vista so it can do stuff and run the INSTALL program properly.

Also, on my CD at least, there's a directory called "HARDDISK", in which it's possible to install the floppy version, and I never hard any problems with that one.

Read my 60 Seconds Guide to DOSBox (and don't just read it - follow it too).

If that doesn't help, come back with details on how you mounted your C and D drives, how you did the install, how you configured sound, music etc.

Reading the aptly named README file will be a good idea too.

Make a directory called oldgames or something similar. Then mount that direcory in dosbox as c:\. Also mount your optical drive as d:\. Then install the game within dosbox (i.e. switch to d:\, then launch the installer and let it install the game to your c-drive).

Don't just copy the files off the cd. In the end you should have the game installed as c:\ufo or something similar in dosbox (outside dosbox it would be c:\oldgames\ufo or something else, depending on where you created that oldgames directory).

Everything works now. Thanks everyone. I had to make Dosbox run as administrator. Plus, the passcodes in the pdf I downloaded did not match up with my game. The passcodes on xcomufo.com, however, did match up. I figured that since the game was going black that it was a problem with dosbox, but everything is fine now.
