I looked through all the Fallout related questiosn, but none addressed the issue I am having.
I have the CD version 1.1 of Fallout, and when I run it in DOSBox, it runs great the first time, but when I exit out of the game and run it again, it is really slow and laggy and the mouse lags.
I tried all the Sound Blasters and Ultrasound to see if that would do anything.
I tried setting Cycles to Auto & Max.
I tried Windowed and Fullscreen.

I was really trying to keep this under DOS too keep to gether with other DOS games under HypersSpin. Since I am not going to add Windows based games to it.

Do by chance know what might be causing the slowdown?
Or recomend anything so I can keep it under DOS?

Forgot to add that my signiture 😅

try running it with a fixed cycles count
eg cycles 15000
both during the first time and next times

Wouldn't running DOSBox with Cycles=max do the same thing?

no, max constantly varies the value of cycles.

Will do, thanks. I really hope it is just the CPU usage.

ok I tried cycles at 15000, and it got completely worse. So I tried 10000, and it was exactly the same. put it back to MAX, and I was back to where I started. I even did small install running from CD and then tried Maximum instal running just off the drive. Same exact results. 😖
As far as My CPU usage stayed almost identical on all configurations, used about 20% max of one core.

No other games does this. I play
Ultima 6,7,8
Bioforge
Prince of Persia 1 & 2
Doom ! & 2
lots more.
All run perfect.

All of those games are nowhere in the same league as Fallout 1 as far as processor requirements.

Bump up your cycles using CTRL+F12 while monitoring CPU usage. You'll probably need to at the extreme least be at 30,000 cycles and probably somewhere in the range of 50,000 cycles.

I don't play Fallout 1 in DOSBox because the requirements are too heavy and I have a C2D clocked at 3.2GHZ. (and the Windows port runs just fine).

Well I try 30K, 45K and 50K. 50K worked good. CPU usage never went past 20%... again

So would it be ok to do 60K or more? I don't know the limits of DOSBox. I don't want to make the program crash.

But so far it works good. If it is ok to take it to higher I will because every 10K over 40K was noticably better.

Thanks DosFreak! You are awesome!

the 15.000 I told was an example 😀
just to point out what a fixed cycle count was.
There is no real limit as long as your pc can handle it.
