I installed sound blaster 16 drivers but for some reason I get a message when I start win 3.1 in DosBox saying I need to upgrade my card to Sound Blaster 16. Does anyone have any ideas on why this is happening?

please be more precise. Did you follow the win3.x guide (including the little section on installing the drivers) at Windows 3.1x DOSBox Guide ? Are you running Windows 3.x on a disk image?
Can you post a screenshot of the error? (Dosbox' screenshot function works even if you run Windows 3.x on it)

I deleted windows and reinstalled. I found a new driver on a different website and installed it. Worked like a charm. Incredibly stupid on my part. Thanks for the reply though dominus.

Grey area I would say.

I suspect, that if you own the hardware then you are usually given the right to download updated drivers. But do you really own an SoundBlaster card if all you have is the emulated SB in DOSBox?

Edit: In fact, let us take a look at the license that I have to agree to before downloading the SoundBlaster 16 driver software from Creative:

Doesn't get more clear than that.

Best use ONLY the driver linked to from the guide. That one works for sure 😀
