I just downloaded DOSbox 0.72. I have the Might and Magic Millennium Edition which has World of Xeen. I installed the disk regularly, it said enter XEEN in DOS. I went to DOSbox and followed the instructions that the basic installation and setup page said, and it keeps telling me that the file does not exist. I tried typing "install" in DOSbox, it takes me to a setup screen, then tells me that there is no disk present even thought the disk is in the drive. What do I need to do to get the game to play?

Read my 60 Seconds Guide to DOSBox (and don't just read it - follow it too).

If that doesn't help, come back with details on how you mounted your C and D drives, how you did the install, how you configured sound, music etc.

Reading the aptly named README file will be a good idea too.

I am having the EXACT same problem..

Its saying the directory or file does not exist. Even after ive confirmed its there by hit dir/p and you can see Xeen.exe file.

I have already gotten MANY games to run in Dosbox just fine. I dont understand why its not recognizing the directory..

Ive installed the game in windows, and directly in dosbox and it still has the same message.

Any help would be great.

I had the exact same problem as described above. I tried installing it on the official DOSBox 0.72, earlier versions, the latest CVS Build and on a real DOS machine, all exited and returned the same error. Because this problem still occurred on real MS-DOS installation I don't believe that the fault lies with DOSBox, but with the game itself. I found an official patch on The Patches Scrolls which seems to fix the problem, I think this patch was for the original CD release of the game but seems to work fine with the Millennium Edition, as far as I can tell.

I am so happy to see another thread about Xeen. I have been trying to get help with Xeen on a Windows '98 machine, and they started making fun of me for using an old OS, so I moved to my XP machine.

How did I set up my folders?

Path for the game is C:\WORLD\XEEN.EXE

How did I mount my drives under DOSBox?

Z:\> MOUNT C C:\WORLD

Z:\> MOUNT D D:\ -t cdrom -usecd 0 -ioctl

change to C:

doing a DIR produces:

. <DIR>
.. <DIR>
WORLDU <DIR> (Directory for the patch the last poster suggested)
DARK.CC
INSTALL.EXE
XEEN.CC
XEEN.CFG
XEEN.DAT
XEEN.EXE

I left off the file sizes because they aren't useful, but if you want 'em I can give 'em.

At the c prompt, type XEEN

the screen goes black, wait about 20 seconds

Error:: No such file or directory

Same result before and after trying the patch.

Gaaaaaahhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!

🙁

Path for the game is C:\WORLD\XEEN.EXE

How did it get there?

world of xeen is pretty special in its installation procedure so be sure to do
it as it's written in the manual or whatever.

How did it get there?

Well, first I installed it through regular DOS and tried to run Xeen through DOSBox. I matched the IRC to the one on my computer, which is 5. Used the 220 setting. I selected Soundblaster.. damn I wish I'd had Sound blaster 15 years ago because that accursed Ultrasound nearly gave me a stroke. Gateway... I have a fatwah against Gateway and their accursed Ultrasound..

Ahem, sorry for the digression.

Got that "Error:: No such file or directory" after the DOS install soooo.... I installed it through DOSBox. Same results.

Has anyone on this forum actually gotten World of Xeen to run on a newer machine?

Install it WITHIN dosbox if you want to run it in dosbox.

I matched the IRC to the one on my computer, which is 5

...which is plain wrong when running it in dosbox. Check the config file
for the actual irq that is used for sb emulation.

@Kashmir - You must overwrite the original XEEN.EXE & XEEN.DAT in your C:\World\ directory from the files in the worldu.zip archive for the patch to work correctly, it looks as if you are extracting the files into a parent directory.

Here is a link to some screenshots of the Millenium Edition of the game working in DOSBox (with the patch).

just an aside

looking at the screenie you posted, have you tried using the HQ3x scaler? It's pretty resource intensive but really really smooths out the pixels. An excellent face lift.

No intro.cc in that directory list.

Thanks for the suggestion.

That's a picture of my cat I took with my cell phone. I'm not so big on photography. I suppose I could clean it up. Oh well.

Oh, good eye!

The intro.cc was is actually in the directory. I just accidentally skipped over it while trying to type one letter at a time. It's hard to go back to DOS when you're so used to cut and paste.

Oh, I know it's hard to read a long laborious email to the end. But at the end of the email you are quoting, I reported that I did install it through DOSBox after it didn't work with the DOS install. I got the same Error message.

Well, duh, when I reinstalled it through DOSBox of course I set the IRC to 7. Just another little tedious, laborious detail I thought we could do without.

Oh, man. I really thought that would work. I replace the .exe file but forgot the .dat file. After you told me to replce the .dat file, I told Kashmir (my pixilated cat) "Wow, now we are going to play this game."

Nope, that wasn't it either. I'm reinstalling through DOSBox and rewriting the patch files over the original files one more time... further reports later.

OMG. That was the solution. So simple it's impossible for a regular person to think of, yet so elegant, like a theorem proof.

You really are a genius. No wonder you get paid the big bucks.

If that had come from anyone but you, I would have backed out as soon as I saw the big red warning that mounting c c:\ was not recommended. But I trust you, since (I'm guessing) without you none of us would be having this conversation.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have about 12 years of game play to catch up on.

😁

Haha. I get payed no big bucks.

Anyway. The copied over from my old pc was a big hint. 😉
If you want to do it correctly.
Create a directory c:\oldgames.
Move your world directory into there
mount c c:\oldgames
c:
cd world
xeen

Have fun

Or install it correctly as noted above.
