Hello,

I've come up against a problem with the game I hope someone can help fix. I was able to mount c and d drives in DOSbox, install the game, test the audio, etc. I even get to the main screen where you start a new game and choose your difficulty. Then I get a screen asking for Disc 1. I have a folder in my IG file labeled CD and that's what the D is mounted to.

The C drive is the game folder itself. I can start the game by typing in C:\IMPERIUM>imperium or D:\imperium and they both have the same outcome one you get past choosing a difficulty.

If anyone could help, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Also, I'm working with DOSbox 0.72, Windows XP Pro, Pentium 4 1.8, 512MB Ram, I updated the game patches and having been reading every post I can find.

What I used to install and followed exactly:

DosBox 0.72

1. Create directories. I like to create two, one for the game installation, and one for the CD files. For simplification, let's call them "C:\Games\IG1\", and "C:\Games\IG1\CD\". It doesn't matter where they are, as long as you remember for later.

2. Download the 1.3 patch for USA. http://www.atari.com/us/support/faq/...wnloads_pc.asp
This patch is BOTH 1.2 and 1.3 rolled into one, it's the only patch you will need!

3. Insert your Imperium Galactica CDs, and copy all the contents to the CD files directory you just made. In my example, "C:\Games\IG1\CD\". Start with the first disk, and once it's done, copy the second disk's files in the same directory. Windows will tell you that some directories already exist, say "Yes To All" to overwrite any files. What this does is put every file into one directory, "C:\Games\IG1\CD\".

4. Copy this patch file (igupd12u.exe) to the CD files directory you made, for example: "C:\Games\IG1\CD\", and then run the file. It will unpack all the patch files needed into that directory. Say "Yes" to Overwrite all files.

5. Set up DosBox. I can't detail this too much, as everyone has a different setup and what works for me may not work for others. Let me tell you what needs to be present though: At the end of your dosbox.conf file, have these entries (change the directories if you named them something different):

Quote:
mount C C:\Games\IG1\
mount D C:\Games\IG1\CD\ -t cdrom -label IMP1
If the "-label IMP1" is not present, the game will not work correctly!

6. Start DosBox and Install the game. Type:
Quote:
d:
This changes you to the virtual CD drive we made (Which is really "C:\Games\IG1\CD\"). Then while in the D:\ directory:
Quote:
install
What that does is run the patched version of the install program. First do "Autodetect Sound" This should give you:
Quote:
Soundcard: SB16
Base Address: 220H
IRQ: 7
DMA: 5
Test it to make sure it works, and then hit "Install Game", and leave everything at default, it will install to "C:\IMPERIUM" (which is really C:\Games\IG1\IMPERIUM in Windows).

8. When in DosBox, in the "C:\IMPERIUM" directory, type:

Quote:
imperium

/End

This does install and load it, but doesn't acknowledge the D Drive I had mounted

That sounds mighty complicated. KISS is your friend:

1) Delete everything in C:\Games\IG1.
2) Start DOSBox.
3) mount C "C:\Games\IG1"
4) mount D "D:\" -t cdrom
5) D:
6) INSTALL
7) C:
8) cd \IMPERIUM
9) IMPERIUM

It should take you about 60 seconds (*hint*).

Then tell us what happens.

Wow, that does sound a lot more condensed. I think it was done that way was to run the game from the harddrive and not a disc (I didn't have the disc either, I got it from some website, but I did eventually make an iso and put it on a disc) so I will delete everything and start with your list.

Sadly, it will have to wait until tomorrow, around 9am Eastern, when I can try it again since I've been doing all this on my work computer (I have macs at home and while I know DOSbox works on a mac, I couldn't find near as much help and if I couldn't get it to work on XP, I had little hope for Leopard.)

Thanks a lot for the information though and hopefully tomorrow, while I should be working, I'll be kicking IG's ass.

In simple words (I love simple!): It was done this way to run an unlicensed (possibly illegal) copy of the game.

As it says on their web-site (http://www.digitalreality.hu/index.php):

Developed by DIGITAL REALITY, published by GT INTERACTIVE SOFTWARE CORP.

Since you are using an illegal copy I suggest you take your questions to the place you obtained it. Experience tells me, that your problem is not caused by a problem with DOSBox, but with how the copy was made.

The question you need to ask yourself now is this:

Is my time spent in getting this illegal copy to work in DOSBox worth more to me, than the costs of buying a legally licensed copy of the game on eBay, Amazon or some other reputable site?

So I'm still trying to play this game ha, I even went and bought the game with a disc (I originally bought it on an old games downloading site).

So I've loaded the C drive as such:
MOUNT C ~/IG

And I've loaded the D drive as such:

MOUNT D /Volumes/IMP1

Then I type D:\install and it goes to the install screen but it will not let me install, the option is not available, though the other ones are, like Auto Detect My Sound Card. This would be fine, I just copied the disc into the folder and it has all the game files ready to go, but without the install option, it won't save to the game my sound card settings (not to mention my in game saves as well) so that is less than desirable. I changed the options in the dosbox conf to the settings I want (sb16, 220, 7, 5) but still no sound. I looked around the IG files, but no config files I can find to edit the type manually.

So I'm assuming that I can't install the game because it doesn't see the C drive? But if that were the case, I wouldn't be able to run the game from the C drive using C:\imperium like I did after I just copied the files over, right?

On a second note, I haven't experinced too much yet, was I decided the play the game without sound and I got a message asking to insert disc 1, even though it's in the drive and the D drive is still mounted. I dunno if one problem will fix the other, I hope so.

Just FYI, I did buy the game on amazon, again since I bought the game before on an old dos game website, and am still running into the same problems. Actually, a few new ones too.

Is that IG directory empty when you try to install from D?

It was originally. It is where I copied all the files from the CD and the accompanying patch after it wouldn't let me install.

On another note, if I run the game from the cd, i don't get the message asking for me to insert disc (sounds fairly obvious I know) but when I run it from the C drive, I do get it, but I can save and load games if I run it from the c drive, but can't go anywhere because it asks for a disc. is there a chance when one drive is mounted it doesn't see the other?

I have a DOS game I'm trying to play that requires the CD (and has a second one later in play) and for some reason I'm having a hard time getting it to work together.

When I mount the C drive (MOUNT C ~/IG) it mounts and I mount the D drive (MOUNT D /volumes/IMP1) it mounts, but when I go to (D:/install) it won't let me install, the option is not available. To get around that I copied all the files (like the install would do) to the folder IG where the C drive mounts. This scenario doesn't work for two reasons:

1) If I play the game from the C drive (C:\imperium) I have sound and can save and load games I play, but can't play them because right at the start, it asks me to insert Disc 1 (it's loaded and the D drive is mounted). So this is completely unworkable

and 2) I can play the game right from the cd (D:\imperium) but to do this I have no sound and no option to save the game. I'm doing this now, because I wanted to play so bad, but I would like the whole experince if I could.

So what it seems like to me is that even though both drives are mounted, it is only seeing one at a time. Is that possible, something you have heard of, etc.?

Thanks

Whoa, you kinda lost me. 🤣 For someone with very limited DB knowledge (and i really only want it to play this ONE game) what would you think would be the best/easiest. However we do it I plan on slapping it in the conf file so I should only have to do it this once. If you could show and example of what you mean, that'd be even better

OK, i used the -t cdrom switch and that makes the game crash at the exact moment it usually would ask for disc 1
