Hey folks, need a bit of help here. I'm confused, I never played this game when it was new (I didn't own a PC until 1999) so I dunno what's going on.

The game is Police Quest 1 VGA remake. I own a copy of Police Quest Collection: The 4 Most Wanted (A real copy! I bought it on eBay!) and the game shows a "Memory Fragmented" error after a while, with a few prompts asking me if I want to debug. Then the game crashes to the DOS console.

I have a saved file somewhere which shows this bug. Like I said, I'm not sure if this is a DOSBox bug or if I managed to break the game on my own... like I usually do with lots of games (seriously, they hated me in school, I could break any game or program in minutes!)

So, any comments? I'm not a DOSBox newbie, I can work my way around pretty much every game I own (I mostly use it to get info for MobyGames), and the game runs fine, it just has this weird issue which I can't figure out.

Most likely a game bug. PQVGA is one of the earliest SCI1 games made and one of the most ambitious functionally so don't be surprised if it's buggy. I never liked it though since I couldn't 'drop pants'

There are some fixes you might want to play with (did some quick Googling):

The good old sierra FTP server is down now that they've passed around and finally discontinued the label 🙁

That's not true. PQ1VGA is an SCI1.1 game. There were plenty of SCI1.0 games before that came out (KQ5, SQ1VGA, PQ3, SQ4, LSL1VGA, LSL5, Mixed Up Fairy Tales). It may have been one of the first SCI1.1 games but I'm leaning more towards KQ6 being the first one since KQ6 was the first to showcase anything Sierra did with interpreter enhancements.

That said, PQ1VGA did have a few bugs riddled in it. I only played it once so I don't know them at all. I don't think I ran into one myself, though. But any memory error messages that pop-up on the screen means it's an SCI game bug so it's not DOSBox for sure.

I actually used the DOSBox installer for all four games from there. Well, I only used it to copy the files to the hard drive, and then copied my normal DOSBox install. My problem doesn't have anything to do with the cafe or the park, so I'll try to make a video to show you folks what's going on.
