Can someone explain a clear step by step way to use the first Carmageddon
CD on Vista 32 bit? (I have an Athlon 3500 with an Nvidia 7800 GS OC AGP card.)

All I've managed to do so far is get DOSBox to run the intro. When I click
the menu to start a new game, I get the message to "Please insert the Carmageddon
CD" even though it's in my D drive. I've tried tinkering with various things but that's
as far as I get, so I guess I'll have to uninstall everything and start over.

Read my 60 Seconds Guide to DOSBox (and don't just read it - follow it too).

If that doesn't help, come back with details on how you mounted your C and D drives, how you did the install, how you configured sound, music etc.

Reading the aptly named README file will be a good idea too.

The game is installed in two places--I used the first one for DOSBox with D-Fend Reloaded:

C:\Users\glenster\DOSBox\INTRPLAY\CARMA
C:INTRPLAY\CARMA

They're each only 181MB, but the version on my real D drive is 268MB.

I think I might have left out quotation marks used in the 60 seconnds guide (?).

Where it says

If you have more than 60 seconds to spare, use Notepad to edit
"%ProgramFiles%\DOSBox-0.72\dosbox.conf" and add....

Is it okay that I used
Program Files\DOSBox-0.72\dosbox.conf
?

If you were able to open it with Notepad, add the lines, then you should be okay.

Second try with just the 60 second guide (as before, using the settings it
recommends for the sound setup):

I think the stuff beyond 181MB is a promotion to try to get you to sign up with AOL (Internet provider).

I ended up with
C:\Users\glenster\DOSBox\INTRPLAY\CARMA\Users\glenster\DOSBOX\INTRPLAY\CARMA
(?)

If I try to run the game, I get:

There is no mounted drive that is allowed to run the physical folder
C:\Users\glenster\DOSBox\INTRPLAY\CARMA\User....
which is needed to run the program. D-Fend Reloaded will try to interpret the
path as a DOSBox local path.

Then the box disappears.

In D-Fend Reloaded, I clicked Profile > Add with wizard
and filled in the blanks (the location of CARMA.BAT, the year the game was
made, etc.).

If I start the game by clicking Run > Run program in D-Fend Reloaded,
the first screen includes:
Drive C is mounted as local directory C:\Users\glenster\D-FEND`1\VIRTUA`1\
Drive D is mounted as local directory C:\Users\glenster\DOSBox\INTRPLAY\CARMA\
USERS\GLENSTER\DOSBOX\INTRPLAY\CARMA\
DOS/4GW Protected Mode Run-time Version 1.97

After that, there's no Interplay or cutscene--it goes straight to the menu.

If I click to start a new game, I get Please insert the Carmageddon CD.

If I start DOSBox via D-Fend Reloaded, I get
Drive C is mounted as local directory
C:\Users\glenster\D-FEND`1\VIRTUA`1\
(PS: the name has two tilde marks)

I tried to Edit the Profile again, this time to make
C:\Users\glenster\D-Fend\VirtualHD\INTRPLAY\CARMA\CARMA.BAT
the game starter file. It made the game start include Interplay and the
opening cutscene but otherwise gave the same result.

Those long paths with 2 x Users, 2 x DOSBox etc, is so wrong that it hurts my eyes. D-Fend is a fine product, but when you run into problems like this, it is my belief that is causing more trouble than helping. And when you start editing config files made by D-Fend, well, then anything can (and will) happen.

I'll try the things in the ReadMe for "My CD-ROM doesn't work." The three
alternatives call for me to use the number of my CDROM as reported by using
mount -cd

When I use that, I get

CDROMs found: 1
0. D:\

Does that mean the number of my CDROM is 1 or 0 (or even 0.)?

Tried
mount d "d:\" -t cdrom -usecd 0
mount d "d:\" -t cdrom -usecd 0 -noioctl
mount d "d:\" -t cdrom -usecd 0 -aspi

None of them changed anything--the d drive continued to be recognized except by Carmageddon, and the third reaction was "invalid path" or
such (?).

Hmmm... Sometimes you will have better luck using an image (a so-called ISO-file) of the CD instead of the actual CD. Once you have created such an ISO from the CD, use the IMGMOUNT command instead of the normal MOUNT command.

I made an ISO with MagicISO.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MagicISO

I found this article that gives a way to load the ISO:
http://www.dosbox.com/wiki/IMGMOUNT#Loading_an_ISO_image

Is this what I do?"

Z:>mount c "c:\images"
Z:>imgmount d "C:\Users\glenster\Documents\Carmageddon.iso" -t iso
Z:>d:
D:>

Then try to run the game as usual?

Close.

Read my 60 Seconds Guide to DOSBox (and don't just read it - follow it too - EXCEPT for the CD-mounting).

For CD-mounting your

mgmount d "C:\Users\glenster\Documents\Carmageddon.iso" -t iso

looks fine.

If that doesn't help, come back with details on how you mounted your C and D drives, how you did the install, how you configured sound, music etc.

Reading the aptly named README file will be a good idea too.

I got to the part where I used the imgmount line (instead of the previous D mount line) and entered it, and got the reaction "drive already mounted at that letter." I guess that's because I tried it before and it's still listed. Should I just keep going with the usual instructions? Try the imgmount line again except for imgmount E?

No, don't just keep going. What is it that you have mounted as D?? And how can you have anything mounted as D, as the only command before that is the MOUNT C command?

I followed the instructions for the 60 second guide, made an empty folder for
C, etc., except tried to use imgmount of the iso for d

Z:\imgmount d "C:\Users\glenster\Documents\Carmageddon.iso" -t iso

instead of

Z:\>mount D "D:\" -t cdrom

and got "drive already mounted at that letter"--my CD/DVD drive, I guess,
still there from before.

So I used E for imgmount and went through the rest as usual (a little after my
last post but before your last post).

If I type CARMA into DOSBox, Z:\>CARMA, I get Illegal command: CARMA.
If I type C:\ into DOSBox, Z:\>C:\, I get Drive C does not exist!

I tried a D-Fend Reloaded profile to run it. The first brief screen indicates
the ISO is mounted, I didn't get the opening cutscene but got the menu, and when
I tried to start a new game I got the prompt to Please insert the Carmageddon
CD.

Impossible.

You already defined the D drive under D-fend, and it is faithfully mounting it for you when you launch using it. Honestly it seems in this case you are confusing yourself with the front end, it may be better to just edit a config file and launch dosbox, as described in the guide.

If you want to stick with D-fend, launch it, click once on the profile for the game, then click "Edit" from the D-fend menu. Click on Drives, select the D drive you have defined, and delete it. Then you can mount the CD image (which D-fend also supports defining).

Thanks! The thing is actually running!

I used D-Fend Reloaded, opened the profile of the game, and used the C:\Users\
glenster\DOSBox\USERS\GLENSTER\DOSBOX\INTRPLAY\CARMA\CARMA.BAT file from the
game installation as the program file. I right-clicked the game and chose Edit,
and clicked Drives in the left side bar. C:\Users\glenster\D-Fend Reloaded\
VirtualHD\INTRPLAY\CARMA, containing the game files, was the C drive. I deleted
the PC D drive as the mounted D drive. I made the Carmageddon.ISO the D drive,
and clicked Auto-create, which made the installation of the game at C:\Users\
glenster\DOSBox, etc., appear as the E drive.

Note that it means that both the C and E drives have full installations of the
game, and the D drive is an ISO file of it. D-Fend Reloaded sure is curious.

I also added to the free virtual space:
