Hi,

I hope somebody can help me here. Recently I installed DosBox and tried to play Tornado.
The sim loads without problems and I can see the GUI as expected; the problem begins when I commit a mission (simulator, free flight, campaign, whatever) and I see the game as if I were looking a negative image.
Here is a screenshot showing my problem.

flight000.jpg

I use DOSBox 0.73. My video card is an ATi 4870 with 1024MB.
I tried all the machine=xxx options from vga_only to vesa_oldvbe, all with the same results.

I have read the README and searched in this forum, but couldn't find any solution.
I know the sim runs well because there are videos in Youtube from a german guy who also uses it (that's is how I found about DOSBox); I contacted him to ask about his configuration but he didn't answer me yet, but in a previous mail, he told me that he uses the sim with the default DOSBox options.

BTW, These are my specs

Motherboard Gygabyte GA-EP45T-DS3R
Processor Intel Quad Core 2.5GHz (can recall the exact type right now)
4GB RAM
ATi 4870 with 1024MB
Sound Board is included in the motherboard, Realtek ALC889A
Windows 7 Release Candidate with all official updates

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I tried the sim in another PC, very different to mine, and the result is exactly the same 😢

I tried with 0.72 also, that is the version used by the guy who runs it without problems, but I still get the same results in both PCs

hmm for the sake of testing.
kill explorer.exe before starting dosbox.

What Tornado version? 1.0e seems to run fine on CVS. Is the screen that way always or does it become messed up part way through the game?

If that screenshot is taken using ctrl+F5 then it's not a display problem. Could be a corrupted game.

The image is .jpg so i guess it is not taken by ctrl+F5. Although it has proper dimentions 320 x 200 pixels, so a convertion from .png is also possible.

Some people still think JPEG is the best format for every task.

The version is indeed 1.0e. The screen is like that as soon as I commit a flight; the user interface, where you select the mission or campaign is OK.
I will try with the CVS versión as soon as I can.

You'll need to set the SDL_VIDEODRIVER=WINDIB variable before starting DOSBox

Is that a setting for the dosbox.conf file? If that's the case, in which section must be added? [autoexec] maybe?

The screenshot is taken with Ctrl-F5 and later converted to JPG just to upload it. I am not so sure that the issue is caused by a corrupted game, but I have to try another one, maybe EF2000, or Falcon 3 that is more contemporary to Tornado to be sure

Nevermind, I already found the answer; I tried with windib and directx with the same hated result 😵

Is there maybe a uvconfig.exe or other setup program in the game directory to set the graphics card?

Well, I have found the solution (at least in the second PC).
When I bought the game in CD back in 1994, I always started the game with the GO.BAT file; so I did the same in DosBOX.
I instead run TORNADO.BAT and the colors are correct. This bat calls tsg.exe, snow_off.com and ttc.exe before starting the sim.
I will do this same test in my main PC and report back as soon as possible.

I can confirm now that the problem was in the GO.BAT. My main PC run the sim as expected once I launched it from the Tornado.bat fil.
