My AWE32 does run pretty hot. Maybe the heatsink is justified.

Heatsinks can be necessary for those things. Have you ever heard an overheated AWE64? 😳

Hmmm...seems like everyone gave excellent ideas here... connect that baby to a water cooler, add a 120mm extra-fast fan to really make sure it stays cool while "overclocking" it!
For additional precautions, run it from within a freezer!

It's just arrived, and I've installed it in a Win95 box. It works, but it's such a pity about the infamous hanging note problem - I tested Doom with a Roland SCB-7 daughterboard, and within a minute or so I could hear a stuck note. Regarding the heatsink, I pressed my fingers against it while it was playing Doom, and I could barely feel any heat on the heatsink, but perhaps I need to leave it on for much longer before it heats up?

The top SIMM holder is broken, but I've managed to push on a SIMM anyway. Seems to stick OK. The Win95 hardware auto detect feature locked up first time, but worked second time. The resources allocated were "all over the place", so I manually set them to the typical 5,1,5,330,620 settings.

i'd just take that ridiculous heatsink off 🤣. unless it's superglued or something of equal stupidity heh heh

I kinda like it! It's, um, unique! 😀 It just touches the wavetable daughterboard, so it's dual purpose really - a special heatsink and nifty DB stopper. 🤣

Man, that heatsink sure looks funny... definately not one on (all of) my CT2760's <G> -> http://www.cmoo.com/snor/weeds/Weeds_486DX4-100.htm . Never had a heat problem with any of mine... I don't remember them even getting luke warm.

EMU8K chips can get pretty hot, especially if you have plenty of RAM installed. Looks like the previous owner glued an old northbridge heatsink on top of it.

Regarding the "DB stopper" feature: Make sure the heatsink doesn't short something on the DB!

If you decide you want to remove it a quick stay in the freezer will make the glue brittle and it should pop right off (assuming they didn't use epoxy or some other form of overkill).

Yesterday I installed my DB50XG again, and noticed one of the chips was really getting very hot in little time. Now guess what I did... 😉

Maybe my memory is fading, but I swear I never noticed any major heat from the EMU8K on any of my AWE32 cards. Like I said t'ho, prolly simply my memory fading.

Anyhow, I've had them for years (all with two 16 meg SIMMs installed), and they still work today... so I figger that the heatsink is prolly overkill.

Then again maybe not (this coming from someone who is totally paranoid about heat... check out that fan card in that old 486 in the pics in my previous link 🤣! 😀 )

🤣 also consider how old these cards are now and that they still work today. They would have heatsinks if they needed them.
