Hi folks. Windows Vista 64 bit is my OS, and 0.72 is the version I'm using. When I alt-ent, my screen goes black, and my machine completely crashes. Nothing I do short of killing the power to my box works. It works great windowed, though.
Any ideas on a fix?

Also if a regular application like dosbox is capable of crashing your complete
system you should check your hw components anyways.
You should check your hardware as Wd pointed out and also update all your drivers.
Get the latest DOSBox 0.73 and edit its configuration. Use anything but surface for output.

el_pusher is correct, output=surface doesn't work well on a lot of modern Vista/Win7 systems. Also, 0.72 is outdated and you will thus not get much support for it.
The reason I'm using 0.72 is because 73 didn't have a conf file, and Windows won't let me write files to that folder, even though I'm set up as admin.
I'll definitely do the drivers thing in a few minutes.
When you install 0.73, it puts the conf file in one of your Vista user folders (because in Vista/Win7, files in Program Files are supposed to be read-only), and creates a shortcut in your Start Menu called something like "Edit DOSBox configuration". You're supposed to use that to edit your .conf.
Okay, just went and reinstalled 0.73, resinstalled drivers, and set output=ddraw. Same exact problem.

Try output=opengl.
You could also try setting a different fullresolution. Maybe your computer just can't handle the low resolutions that DOSBox is trying to use.
Switched to opengl, and set res to 0x0. Black screen of death. Just checked my display settings, my card's lowest res is 800x600, so I will try that next when I feel like forcing another shutdown.
Can you switch back to windowed mode with alt-enter when your "black screen of death" happens?
nope. totally locked up.
Then get somebody to check your system in-depth (hw components, drivers) as this is clearly not dosbox's fault.
You might try running dxdiag and saving a report and then attaching it to a post here.

You may want to try installing nVidia drivers and/or BIOS updates from Dell:
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/dri … n&catid=&impid=
nVidia has even newer drivers available at their site that have been tested and approved by Microsoft: http://www.nvidia.com/object/win7_winvista_32 … 91.07_whql.html
Also kind of weird that you don't have Service Pack 2 installed for Vista...
