Here's my board, I'm running it right now with Diiamond's driver and the highest color I can go is 16bit @ 1600x1200 or 24bit @ 1280x1024. So that pretty much sums mine up to be a 4mb board, or am I wrong? I was really thinking these things were 2+2mb, 8mb cards would be like $1000 back in 96' 😵 Back of my board says 2+

Image quality on my 22" NEC (20" viewable) is pretty good for a 13 year old card, but not noticeably any better then the 2000/DX I just pulled out. I don't think the Matrox Mistique 220 I have is really a whole lot better to the eyes either.

Does the image quality on graphics cards deteriorate over time, and also is image quality affected by other components in the system, such as the motherboard quality, mobo BIOS, PSU quality, etc?

I know that when I had the Mystique 220 that I ran it at 1152x864 most of the time because I ran a 17" CRT and that was the comfortable resolution with respect to refresh rate. That was rather typical of the demands on cards at the time and I imagine that's partly why most of those cards look bad at higher resolutions+refresh rates. No need to add cost to the board when few would even notice.

The analog signal quality is almost entirely determined by the quality of the circuitry connecting the DAC to the output. I don't think they deteriorate much over time.

BTW, my Matrox G200 is one of the more blurry cards believe it or not. And, I've had 2 Diamond Stealth 3D 2000s and they were different in output quality.

Hey, I think I have one of those Stealth 3D cards laying around in my parts toolbox! The purple sticker and the riser card with extra RAM chips jogged my memory. I think I salvaged it from somewhere and have never used it myself.

There was a mod I used to do to video cards, which would often help with the blurriness. It made a huge difference on TNT2 and Geforce2 cards I had. Basically it was just a matter of removing the little filter capacitors near the VGA connector. They were put there as low-pass filters to reduce RF emissions, but they also reduced video bandwidth, which hurt video quality at higher resolutions.

Of course that's not something you'd want to do to a rare or valuable card, but for a random Matrox card or whatever, it might be worth a try.

The mothership has just received another 10KG payload of retro goodness from RetroFunLand (a.k.a. Germany), and I found some freebies in there. Included was this Rendition card! 😀 I'll test it soon..

Alas, I fear the worst. I removed it from my socket 7 test board, and tried it in an Asus P2B slot 1 board but no joy I'm afraid. Bah! That's a pity - my first ever Rendition card, and it's in a coma. It looks OK - nothing visually wrong with it.

I tried cleaning the contacts. Also, in preparation for some fun and games, I had DL'd that huge driver package from your O.P., plus located the Miro driver package on the mirosupport.de fansite. Oh well.

Just for some extra info, on the back of the card it says: copyright 1997 miro/canopus.

Shrinks are all mad! They'll make you to do dull stuff like behave sensibly.
It's perfectly normal to collect thousands of retro items, and not be able to move in your own home as a result.
I think. 🤣
