Make sure you're enabling low-level CD-ROM support. If you are, try using SAPUCDEX.
Yes, it’s my fault.
hmmmm what is SAPUCDEX?
i have enabled lowlevel cdrom in the vdmsound launchpad....but no effect...
Type SAPUCDEX into the "Quick Search" box at the top of the page.
Yes, it’s my fault.
hmm sorry still the same error...

This is unusual. All other reports on Star Trek: A Final Unity have to do with sound problems, not CD access:

Is might be possible that your CD has "gone bad".
Have you run "SETUP.EXE" with VDMSound w/ low level CD-ROM support (not just with "STTNG.EXE")? Make sure the INI file points to your CD-ROM drive, should be a "CD=" line in it.
This one has given me problems too, not just choppy sound, but with video too. If I have the movies enabled, the movies play fine, but the display in the game will scrambled. It looks like the scan lines are mixed up, as if the monitor can't handle the resolution/refresh rate. If I turn the movies off in the INI file, the display will be fine, but of course, no movies.
hi guys! i did it.....nearly..
the setup is done (using virtual pc with freedos 9)
installation was no problem and there was sound.
but now i have another problem...when i start the game it seems to hang...
screenshot:
anybody got an idea why it is?

No fair! Using Virtual PC is cheating! *kidding*

Not really. I would really need to find my CD try it out and that might be a while.
When all else fails, try the minimalist approach. Configure it run using the lowest possible resolution with no sound.
Unfortunately, AFU is VESA-only, so that's half the troubleshooting out the window. Also, while I'm sure FreeDOS is 99% compatible with DOS, there's always the possibility that ST:TNG AFU is part of that other 1%.
hmm yeah thats possible...ok i will install a real msdos 6.22.
hope it works
hmm still the same under real msdos 6.22
it detects some more things but it still hangs
*sigh*
I'll try to find my CD.
hope you find it soon! can't wait to play that game again 😀
This may be a while. Checked the place where it was supposed-to-be and it's not there. That means it's at *random location*, which will take some time...
BTW, it appears that previous efforts at running it in VPC also ended in failure:
showthread.php?threadid=1161&highlight=Unity
While others got it running in XP, but with horrible audio:
showthread.php?threadid=75&highlight=Unity
showthread.php?threadid=823&highlight=Unity
I am also trying to get this awsome game to work under XP,
but I'm failing.
I can't install it, thats the main issue right now.
After running the install file (INSTALL.BAT) on the cd,
it complains that I have no buffers (20 is minimum)
and it complains that my cd-rom is to slow (the funny thing is that the first 3? times I tried installing it didn't complain on the cd-rom, just the buffers)
I've tried installing it with VDMSound but, no success..
any ideas ?

There is a patch for that:
http://dlh.net/cgi-bin/dlp.cgi?lang=eng&sys=p … nist.zip&ref=ps
http://www.gamesdomain.com/patches/s/1877.html
Infogrames also has some info:
http://www.atarisupport.com/faq/stunity_pc.asp
You could also try this trick:
http://www.gametalk.com/talk/pc/star_trek_the … ty/53305461.htm
ahh.. that did the trick..
thanks..
I think I got it to work quite well now. I still had one or two crashes but it seems quite stable right now and the sound is good.
What did I do? Well after installing the game with the patch mentioned above, I installed the VDMsound stuff like Nicht Sehr Gut described in another thread:
Install Vlad's VDMSound program.
VDMSound v2.04 at http://www.ece.mcgill.ca/~vromas/vd...load/index.html
After installation is completed, copy the files from the 2.04 Update zipfile at http://vdmsound.sourceforge.net/files/ on top of the original files (wherever you installed them, the default for this is
C:\Program Files\VDMSound\).
Then download and install the GUI Launcher VDMSLaunchPad.v1.0.0.7, also at : http://vdmsound.sourceforge.net/files/
Then I start STTNG.EXE with the VDMS and the little musical note just in front of it, that's how you get into custom configuration for the game. There I changed a few settings.
- disable midi
- disable adlib
- soundblaster 1.05 (soundblaster 1.x)
- DOS Environment: I added "BUFFERS=40" below the FILES=40
- Performance: activate Cap DOS timer frequency
let me know how it works for you
greets

it works a little bit, but the sound has scratches and delays.
i tested to fight the romulan warbird and the game crashed.
