I downloaded the X-Com complete pack from steam in anticipation to experience what has been said as the best game ever made. I double click to start the game (in steam), DOSBox starts for a second or two. It gets past the "DOSBox Status Window", but as soon as the "DOSBox .72, Cpu Cycles: 3000, Frameskip 0, Program: DOSBOX", it immediately crashes and says "DOSBOX DOS Emulator has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly, ect...". Well I thought I had the wrong version, so I download v.74, open it separately (not from steam), and the exact same thing happened.

I run on Windows 7 64 bit
XFX nForce 970i Ultra 3-Way SLI
Phoenix -AwardBIOS v 6.00PG
Intel Core 2 Extreme CPU X9650 @ 3.00 GHz (no overclock)
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 275
4096MB RAM
DirectX 11

So I come to you for help, for I want to be able to enjoy X-Com and other older games like the rest of you. I use a selective start-up too, but I'm not sure if that makes any difference. Thanks in advance, I really, REALLY appreciate it.

Everything has been updated to its latest configuration. In the manual it says to "use different values for the output= entry in your DOSBox configuration file", but I have no idea what that means, nor what outputs to try.

Still no luck.

Update:

I looked at the manual, and changed these values:

language=1
machine=vgaonly (tried vesa_nolfb and svga_s3y, but all had the exact same effect)

core=normal
cputype=auto
cycles= 10000
cycleup=10
cycledown=20

nosound=true

xms=false
ems=false
umb=true
keyboardlayout=auto

This has lead to it starting and hanging at the "DOSBox" window before exiting instead of windows crash (error report, etc).

I understand that, I already tried surface, overlay, opengl, openglnb, ddraw.

I'm not an expert at DOS Box, so if you know of any other things I could try, I would really appreciate it.

Update:
When I changed language=1 back to language= , then it gives me the windows crash message. I changed all other recommended values back and fourth, and have isolated it to the language= code.

I think you should delete the game install and re-download it. If it still doesn't work, try changing only the output= setting to other values.

Are you on a non-US OS? Is that why you're trying to change the language setting?

How many best games ever made are there now? 😁

X-Com is a great game. Very challenging and compelling strategy on just about every aspect of its gameplay. I get burned out on it though.
