Genewars v1.1 with dosbox-0.74
Blue is a comment or addintional information and not to type in console.
Red is something you can adjust to your liking.
What you need:
Genewars CD or Image
Genewars Patches found here:
http://genewars.lubie.org/html/gwedit_patches.php
Official patch 1.1 = genewars_official_patch_1_1.zip
Alternate DOS Extender = dos32a-912-bin.zip
What you do:
1) Insert disc into your CD-Rom drive or mount the image.
2) Start "DOSBox 0.74 Options.bat"
Insert following lines to [autoexec] section on the very end of the file:
mount c <folder you like for genewars> -freesize 500
Note: It does not work without -freesize 500... maybe it can be set lower, but 250 was not enough. The game needs 104 MB when installed.
mount d "<your CD-Rom drive - eg: d:\ or e:\>" -t cdrom
c:
3) Installation of Genewars
3a) Start "dosbox.exe"
3b) Type:
install
Procede with installing the game, by chosing sound first (you may test it with "Test" button) and installing the game afterwards on "c:\<sub-folder you want or none>".[/color]
4) Patch the Game:
In your OS(not in dosbox):
4b) genewars_official_patch_1_1.zip
Unzip gwp.exe, patch.exe, text.dat into your Genewars folder.
In dosbox:
4c) Type:
gwp.exe
Accept all Inflating file questions with "y".
patch.exe
Uneeded files will be deleted and patch will be finished.
In Windows/Linux (not in dosbox):
4d) dos32a-912-bin.zip
Unzip binw\dos32a.exe into your Genewars folder.
Rename dos4gw.exe to dos4gw.exe.old for backup purposes.
Rename dos32a.exe to dos4gw.exe.
Finished. Start with typing "genewars".
5) Settings that work for me:
cputype=486_slow
cycles=55000
6) Mistakes to avoid:
If you are changing your path structure later, you have to change it in Genewars\config.ini too.
It is not important in which folder in windows the game is, just the end result in dosbox is what matters.
Example:
dosbox mounted a folder as "c" for installation.
You install Genewars in "C:\"
Genewars\config.ini has to be <InstallDrive="C:\">
If you change the folder structure now in Windows and still mount the game folder in dosbox as "c", it is still the same for the game.
If you change the mount in dosbox and mount your local "D:\Games\" as "c" and type "cd genewars" in dosbox to access the game folder,
then you have to rewrite Genewars\config.ini to <InstallDrive="C:\Genewars\">
I hope you understand what I mean. Enjoy!
