I have a weird issue with my Retro PC. It's been working fine for years, but suddenly all adlib sounds are very weak.

I noticed this today when I played Commander Keen 4. The music/sound was barely audible. After some troubleshooting I've found out this low-volume issue affects all games using adlib sounds.

e.g, if I run Pinball Fantasies in Sound Blaster 16 mode, all is well. If I select adlib the 'low-volume' issue occurs.

I suspect an On-board amplifier has stopped working.

Does the AWE64 Gold have a separate Adlib/FM synthesis chip that, if defective, can cause this issue?

Have you tried the mixer utility?

Yes, I've checked the mixer utility. Sound level is properly adjusted. (I haven't made any changes to the system from yesterday)

Well does it respond if you change its volume?

The problem was with the ctmix.cfg file. For some reason it was read-only with low midi volume setting.

Things are working as normal now 😀
